Your Are Spoiled And Just Dont Know It: The Average Sedan Is Faster Than Many Legendary Performance Cars Of the 70's

Sometime in the next couple of months, the Dodge Challenger SRT Demon and its 808 horsepower will show up in dealership windows like some kind of tiny, red, tire-melting factory. Yes, 808 horsepower. There’s no typo.

Teenage boys will lose their minds. Some older ones, too. But beyond the Vin Diesel fan club, it’s actually not such a big deal anymore. Last year, U.S. drivers on the hunt for more than 600 horsepower had 18 models to choose from, including a Cadillac sedan that looks more swanky than angry. Meanwhile, even boring commuter sedans are posting power specifications that would have been unheard of during the Ford Administration.

"you are" or "you're" spoiled. Do any of the website author's use spell check?

I'm mightily impressed by today's vehicles, and not in the "just add more power" way. Peak power, peak torque and curve (power delivery), steering, transmissions, over-all feel, apparent level of luxury, and fuel economy have all improved.

Without any joking, a current-era sport-oriented luxury SUV (or crossover) compares favorably in real world (non-track) conditions to a 20-year-old BMW 328, for about the same new-vehicle price (not adjusted for inflation)... except the SUV will accelerate faster, get much better fuel economy, and offer lots more space. Factor in inflation, and today's vehicles can be a bargain, too!

My recollection of 1970's muscle cars is that it was all about brute force in a straight line... assuming you could keep it in a straight line. Definitely not my cup of tea.

My 1971 Buick GS 455 Stage One was absolutely a monster on a straight line, but overall it handled well, when you consider the era. Of course, I had huge Goodrich Radial T/A tires shoehorned into the rear wheelwells, with the fronts as large as I could fit and still get full turns. It was also not jacked up at all, compared to the trend of the time to use air shocks to point the ass into the air. Did that on some earlier cars, but not my GS.

You may think you want an old Charger, Cuda, Challenger, Mustang, Camaro etc, but what you really need is a resto-mod that drives great and has modern emissions + electronics. That or something cool from the guy at Superformance. They have a GT40 replica there for sale with Gulf Oil colours that looks the business. Bring money.

Yes, that new Hellcat with almoswt 850H.P. will wipe the floor with that anemic 427/435 H.P.1967 Vette or that feeble 1970 426 Hemi Cuda.
