Tesla Drops Model Y Teaser - What's The First Thing You Notice Is Missing?
Tesla had its big annual shareholder call today with plenty of confirmations for things that were expected to be confirmed, but one little surprise was this sneak peek at the Model Y crossover.

Tesla’s Model Y is the long-rumored compact crossover, meant to slot under the Model X. Originally, it seemed the Model Y would be based on the Model 3 platform, but that’s been nixed and the Model Y and all future Teslas will be on a new platform with a new electrical system layout.

What's missing? Aside from the side mirrors, my desire to get one.

SUVs are in demand right now. If the Model 3 has 500,000 preorders before a single one is sold and on the road...

I thought the number being reported is below 400,000. And of those 500,000 pre-orders, do you actually believe that all 600,000 deposit-holders are going to line up and take delivery of those 700,000 cars? By the time Tesla builds the full 800,000 pre-ordered cars, some of the original 900,000 deposit-holders might have lost interest and gone elsewhere. Call me a tad jaded, but I think those 1,000,000 pre-orders might be just a bit optimistic.

Those 500K pre-orders aren't guaranteed sales.

The last official count was 400k and that was in 2016, based on new reservation estimates on Tesla forums the current count is just above 500k.

No, they are not guaranteed sales--you can get your $1k back very easily. It is very unlikely many people will pull a reservation on a car that is sold out for 1.5 years, especially since only people on the list today will get the $7,500 or $3,250 federal rebate. You would have to be nuts to pass on the opportunity to get a Model 3 for $27,500. I'm sure the first units could be resold for above $35k.

I have 8 coworkers on the list. Some fussed about the nose design initially, then about the single screen, then having to wait longer for AWD... but none have cancelled or are planning to cancel their reservation. There would have to be a serious compromise that hasn't already been announced to trigger mass cancellations.

I've got 2 on the short list, but might hold off the second one for a P3 model later next year. No complaint from me. As for the price, think of it in term of its stock price - 100 shares for a cool EV, how sweet!

It maybe too early to speculate on the Y, but I would definitely give it a try when the time comes. It will have plenty of competitors by then (Audi, BMW, Jaguar), but the more the merrier, so many options to choose from. The EV market will get very interesting.

@TheSteve: as an early reservation holder and an investor in Tesla, I don't give a rat's ass how many pre-orders there are as long as Tesla meets its goal to deliver this year to the early birds.

For someone who has no stake in Tesla - as a potential customer or as an investor or shortseller - you have been quite opinionated and irrelevant at the same time. Maybe you should spend more time talking about your love of the Audi Q5 diesel or your precious previous BMW experience ??

Tesla as a company and a movement is very different from you have known. Sit back and observe instead.

HenryN: Sorry buddy. I won't disappear just so you can avoid getting triggered when you read my posts. That's for you to work through (or not).

I sincerely hope your Tesla order turns out to be everything you expected, and more! No sarcasm intended or implied.

@TheSteve: I know anonymous chat boards are places where people spill their guts and their life stories, but I would prefer to treat it like a corporate meeting - you say what you need to say with people's full attention, if not then "sit back and observe".

HenryN: For a guy who says he “…I would prefer to treat [AutoSpies forums] like a corporate meeting…”, you sure do personify the *worst* of “corporate culture” (of which I have seen plenty):
- Puts people down
- Tries to shut down dissent and views that differ from his (most comfortable with “yes men”)
- Tries to monopolize/control the conversation (related to point above)
- Takes things personally (as a Tesla reservation-holder and stock-holder, you seem particularly sensitive to posts, and people, who don’t share your pro-Tesla enthusiasm)
- Wants to have everyone play by his rules (needs to be in control, viewed as an authority). Issues orders, as though he is in charge.

Good luck with that :-/

Steve: if you go back to read your own comments in the thread, you'll understand why you got a harsh response. Stick to the facts, and lay off the phrase "sincerely hope ... " - it makes you look vain.

Tesla is a business with a good cause, it attracts supporters due to its grand visions and sound strategies - hope does not play here. I have no shame to be one of them. Even as a supporter, I don't mind those who slam Tesla for whatever reason (a few of them are here on this board) but I do have problem with veiled attempts to bash it using kind words. It's simpler if we know who's for or against it.

HenryN wrote “…It's simpler if we know who's for or against it…” and “…[you use] veiled attempts to bash [Tesla] using kind words…”

One of the reasons you’re having such a hard time here is because you need things to be “black or white.” Otherwise, you don’t feel okay. The mindset of “You’re either with us or against us” and “Us or them.”

You have a hard time wrapping you mind around the fact that someone can:
(1) Not have faith in the Tesla Motors
AND…
(2) Still hope for the best so that Tesla Model 3 (and other) deposit-holders, and TSLA shareholders don’t get burned.

Your difficulty with this could explain why you take things personally, and why you get upset when someone says something negative about Tesla. Well, rest assured that when I state my opinion (or known financial facts) about Tesla, I am NOT commenting about you personally!

Re “…lay off the phrase "sincerely hope ... " - it makes you look vain…”

You have problems with other’s sincerity too? Wow.

@HenryN You say: "Tesla is a business with a good cause, it attracts supporters due to its grand visions and sound strategies"

The ONLY good cause for a business is to MAKE MONEY. Tesla is NOT trying to save the environment.

It's "grand vision" is MARKETING which is essential to MAKING MONEY.

Sound strategies? That made me laugh.

I was in Kentucky for a week and saw one Tesla the whole time (I even swung by an 8-stall supercharger). I see dozens of Model X's a day in Silicon Valley. The black one and white one with black tires have grown on me. Think the Model Y will look much better as it will not be tied to a car platform.

Will this be another minivan with idiotic falcon doors.

I have yet to see one of those stupid Tesla minivans on the road. My eyes are glad.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------What sort of podunk backwater do you call home? Teslas are everywhere in my town, being driven by affluent, educated people of the sort you may not see when you are bowling or playing grabass at your local Hooters.
