MB Reviving a Classic

We’ve known Mercedes-Benz has had a world-beater in the works since at least early 2004 when we blew the lid off plans for the McLaren-Mercedes P8 supercar. Now it appears the company has shifted gears once more, heading in the direction of remaking a modern-day version of the classic 300 SL Gullwing.

It will be overpriced, and won't be as nice as the R8.

1) We don't know what this car will look like yet, so claiming the R8 will look better is pretty stupid. And IMO, the R8 is ugly. As much as I like Audi (after BMW), the R8 and the new TT just don't speak to me.

2) Of course it will be overpriced, it's German. The R8 isn't exactly "affordable" either, pal.

By "not as nice", I mean the overall quality and feel of the car won't be as nice as the R8. But, as far as the looks go, the photoshop is pretty much an R8 with Mercedes cues. As far as the price goes, show me a mid-engine awd exotic that starts under $100K. I didn't say the R8 was affordable, but you won't find a comparable car for the same $$. With Mercedes, you're going to pay dearly for having that 3 pointed star on the hood. I know, I work for MB.

The photoshop means nothing. It's the artist impression and not the guys' from the MB design department.

And how does the R8 "feel nice"? Have you sat in one already? No. Audi's feel nice, but so do BMW, Lexus, MB etc. MB's recent interiors and quality offensive have all made a good impression on me when I encounter and drive them in Europe.

The only prolly is, Benz never copies.

If Mercedes quality and interiors have made a good impression on you, then you're disillusioned. Even mercedes admits their biggest problem right now is quality. And if you really believe that the current BMW interiors are nice, then stay in your BMW, 'cause you wouldn't appreciate an Audi.

You know, you sound like an Audi troll who tries to make himself sound credible by claiming "to work for MB". Spare me.

Good interiors? The Mercedes C-Class, E-Class, S-Class CLS-Class, R-Class, ML-Class, GL-Class and SL-Class all have GREAT INTERIORS if you ask me. I've sat in these cars and spent time in them. They're good. Mercedes' biggest problem is not QUALITY but RELIABILITY. There's a difference between the two that is often overlooked.

FYI, I find the S-Class stunning as well as the CL. In fact, my next car might very well be the new CL-Class. Gorgeous. Design is subjective. I said I don't like the R8 or new TT from a styling point of view. That's MY OPINION. You don't like some of the BMW or MB designs, fine, that's your opinion.

I have no problems admitting that BMW interiors aren't the best in the business at this moment. They're good interiors in terms of build quality, but the materials used don't really match up to the competition.

Yeah, Audi makes good interiors but they've got some cheap ones as well. In Europe, I once rented a current A3 1.9 TDI and the interior was nothing special. Yes, you read that right, NOTHING SPECIAL. I've also checked out the new TT (not driven it, but inspected it) and the interior of this car tries to hard to look and feel cool. It comes across as goofy to me. The rest, A4, A6, A8 Q7 etc. all have stunning interiors.

So what, though? Does the "better interior" make the "better car"?

The original C-Class was cheap, not the facelifted one. MB injected quality back into that car. E-Class basic? We're talking about the new E-Class here. I've driven it in Europe and the interior has been improved big time. S-Class / CL? We're talking about material quality, not design. The materials on the S-Class / CL are definitely up there with the best. R, ML and GL aren't basic as you claim.

Of course, if we're talking Lexus here, even the almighty God himself couldn't have designed an interior so ergonomically perfect, so full of quality materials that just make you shit in your pants when you see and touch them. Amazing that they can sell those cars for such cheap prices too! Simply incredible!

Yes, the C-Class interior isn't class leading but the point is that it's a good interior that was mightily improved. The 3-Series interior is the worst between the A4, C and IS - this coming from a BMW fan.

The E-Class interior was always good, but it got even better. Definitely up there with the A6 and the GS.

The Benz SUV interiors are good-quality well-made interiors. Not class leading (that goes to the Q7) but good. Good enough to satisfy most dash-strokers.

I have an A3!

And the interior is nicer than any other hatch sold in America!

LOL!!!

Will, the E has a beautiful interior for the class, though not *quite* as high quality as the A6's. I feel that the GS's interior is more subjective. I don't think it stands out from the rest much in terms of design. E is far from basic.

I agree on SUV interiors though. GL and R are exactly like ML, which isn't very nice at all.

Forget the photoshop. Just show me a good design from Mercedes lately.. Anyone? Anyone? And don't say S-class - though it's not as ugly as it's Maybach cousin, it's close. Don't say CL either, unless you like the Buick Regal/M45 look. And if you look up R-class in the dictionary, you get = ugly. Face it gentlemen, as far as styling goes, Mercedes has lost it's way. They're stumbling in the dark right now grasping at straws.

should be great competition for the gallardo, the R8 is a lesser branded car, no competion for Mercedes.
When looking for a nice Mercedes a customer might be interested in Bentley, or lamborghini, an Audi R8 ha! what a joke.

I've worked at an MB dealer for 5 years now. I've been appraising Mercerdes, BMW's and Audi's for 4 of those 5 years, and I promise you, I've driven more of each then you've ever even seen. I would also say that yes, a better interior makes for a better car, unless you drive from the outside of course. Maybe the next gen i-drive will let you steer the car with it... such innovation! Anyways, I have to agree with you, when I saw the latest s-class and cl I was stunned as well. We're giving those cars (s-class) away right now and they're barely into their production cycle. I will agree that the CLS was a HUGE hit for Mercedes, and as far as styling goes a tremendous departure from the norm. The CLS is definitely our boldest and best design. MB is pretty much the Lane Bryant of auto manufacturers, for you Europeans, that's a company that sells fat women clothes to fat women who don't think they're fat.

I believe the Mercedes remains unchallanged in the exterior and interior styling, you might say Audi/BMW are better cars round a track, but from technology/safety/luxury/image the Merc stays on top, the CLS and SL are beautifull in thier catogries, and the S class is amazing especially compared to the plain ugly 7 series, the boxy Lexus LS and the decent A8, the same thing can be said about thier SLR which looks better than the any supercar from other manufacturers,(Porsche Carrera GT or Ford GT)..Mercedes is the ultimate automobile brand..

Agree with everything except the Porsche Carrera GT. It looks way better than the SLR imo.

No other brand has advanced the automobile more than Mercedes. Without this brand, all others would barely exist.

The SLR has been a disaster for Mercedes. Why would you spend $450k for an 8-cyl car with questionable styling? Have you looked at one lately? It's looks like 2 different cars welded together. Stop kidding yourselves. Just because you'll never be able to afford one doesn't make it special.

Why would I ever consider buying the SLR (if i had the dough)?

Simple answer: because its an SLR..

I agree...i find the slr hideous, and if i'm going to drop $450K on a supercar, it sure as hell isn't gonna be an ugly 8 cyl. 5 speed automatic

i was at the benz dealership a couple weeks ago and they've had one for over a year and a half, the pricetag is down to $405.

For my 450k, i'd rather pick up a 599gtb fiorano and with the remaining 150k, i'd put the upcoming RS6 in my garage as a daily driver..and bank the leftover 50k

BMW 530i you are a MORON. LEXUS KILLS Mercedes as far as interiors and reliability is concerned. Lexus exterior designs are also getting better than Mercedes. The LS looks way better than S Class. As far as part sharing I would rather my car share parts with Toyota (like Lexus) than share them with crappy Chryslers (like MB).

MBRULES,

You are the f*cking moron.

Lexus has the reliability, I give you that, but a lot of their interiors are OVERRATED. The RX interior is full of cheap plastics that are colored in silver and which give an initial HQ appearance for example.

And what the hell are you smoking? MB is making a comeback from the looks of it now that Schrempp is gone, whom I disliked as well.

Know what I think? You're a Lexus troll who signed up here under some bullshit name. Go back to school, KID.

People. I find admiring a Lexus to be quite a terrible experience. A story of instant love and hate. The exterior is great. Bravo, well done Lexus. It really gets your spirits flying and I mean it. I declare now that the GS exterior is by far better than the 5-series, E-class and A6. But then you eventually step into an anti-climax of an interior. I'm not sure what it is but it hints a bit of Yaris and Prado (SUV). It just doesn't make sense to me. It insults my senses and expactations and especially after having seen the exterior.

Lexus interiors are shockingly ugly. They need to fix them ASAP.

End of story.

Mercedes were once the greatest brand in the Automotive world and then it got screwed by Jurgen Shrempp and the merger with Chrysler. If you wanna know how not to run a business see DCX if you wanna see the best in Business, see Toyota & BMW.
