CAR WARS! Can Chris Harris Discover SOMETHING About The Lexus GS F That Makes It Suitable To Take On The Mighty BMW M5?
One of the more perplexing vehicle launches in recent memory was the Lexus GS F. While early rumors indicated that the GS F would make use of the LFA's V10 symphony, it turned out to go a completely different direction.

That's because it simply repurposed the RC F's V8 engine. This was a disappointment for many and there's a simple reason for this: It only produces about 470 horsepower.

Keep in mind that the E60 BMW M5 produced 500 horsepower and the current-gen model makes upwards of 575 depending on how you spec the car. Hell, in this Top Gear clip featuring Chris Harris they went for the 30th anniversary car that makes an even 600 ponies.

So, is there even a reason to compare the two?

Although I think I've made it clear why the GS F is a brilliant driver's car sometimes you just need someone else to say it. The more data points, the merrier.

The BMW M5 is the default benchmark performance saloon but can the Lexus GS F and its atmospheric, 471bhp V8 compete? Chris Harris finds out...

It's worth watching the video all the way through!

I happen to think the Lexus GSF is a tremendous vehicle. The GS probably is dead once this generation is done because it's been shunned in the market and that's unfortunate.

I'm glad the GSF has a real automatic rather than yet another unruly, fragile DCT.

I tend to despise all screen-interfaces because 90% of what they do takes longer than conventional knobs and buttons which are automatistic whereas the screens always divert attention from the road ahead.

I'd rather drive the Lexus with its garish face than a BMW that looks 15 years old.

Chris Harris' review was completely fair except for his assessment of the RCF.

The RCF is a fast, boulevard cruiser rather than an M3/4 competitor and as such is preferable to the BMWs.

I really wish Genesis would do a hellbent-for-leather G80.

I also wish Maserati would do a Hellcat Ghibli which is 100% doable with a domed hood.

I want to like and appreciate the lexus, i really do, but nothing aboutit feels special to me, in my mind anything north of $50 or $60k should have a certain presence and feel to it.

Whats also interesting to me is as reliable and dependable as the Lexus GS is, I rarely see any of the previous generations driving around, while by contrast I see E classes on a regular dating 10, 20 years back...

Jeepers driving high powered sedans in winter with summer performance rubber. What could go wrong?

And those conditions no doubt exacerbate the BMW's "issues". They both have too much power and wrong tires for the conditions.

One of the funniest videos I've ever seen is a TVR Typhon trying to negotiate a roundabout in light rain and it keeps spinning out of control while asthmatic Fiestas and Polos zing right around it.

The Lexus also will not sell for anywhere near sticker. The GS's sales are so bad that dealers are willing to deal and the GSF hasn't really caused a stampede.

I have yet to see a single GS-F on the road and I live in exoticarville. I've already seen an M760i and an M550i, neither of which I even thought were at dealerships yet.

The fact is this. No matter how much Lexus tries to protest that it wants to be different and not go the route of the Germans, that's just a sorry excuse for not truly being able to build a car that competes with the AMGs and Ms head on in every category. The RC-F was the first excuse for a car priced in line with the M4 and C63, but doesn't touch them in overall performance. Now the GS-F is the second excuse, though priced just below the E63 and M5, it is blown away in acceleration by even cars like the CTS V-Sport and E43 AMG, which start over $10k below it. Anyone can keep making excuse for Lexus, but they just cocntinue to prove that they cannot figure out how to build powertrains that match the Germans' performance and fuel economy. Their "non-F" models have proved that for years and their "F" models confirm it. Maybe the LC will bring on a whole generation, but I remain skeptical. The LC500 is estimated 0-60 in 4.5 seconds, while the S550 Coupe, heavier and larger by a substantial amount, matches that time.

They are rare. The first problem is that the GS isn't alluring in any way to begin with, so why does a buyer want one with Godzilla horsepower? THAT is the issue.
