Volvo Says Polester Performance Arm May Become The AMG Of Electric Vehicles

Despite being Volvo Cars’ official performance arm since 2015, Polestar has always felt like a separate entity. Its current offerings for the North American market are limited to amped up versions of the S60 and V60 — distinctive in personality and produced in extremely limited quantities. However, Volvo’s parent company Geely wants to make a change, converting Polestar into its own global performance brand focusing on, get this, electric cars.

Apparently, Geely wants Polestar’s future role to mimic Mercedes’ AMG by having it continue to produce modified Volvos while also honing in on exclusive models singularly fixated on performance. However, if many of those are intended to be EVs, questions must be raised as to how things might change at Volvo.

In *my* mind, we first need to get to mass consumer acceptance of EVs before we start thinking about the small number of EV users who might buy an "AMG" performance version.

So far, EVs account for less than 3% of worldwide passenger vehicle sales.

Tesla has a performance version of their Model S and X.

BMW is coming out with a better-handling i3s, calls their PHEVs iPerformance and of course has the i8 which is all about performance.

We have Formula E now in its fourth year, and the new Electric GT series. There is even an endurance "Garage 56" class vehicle being considered by Panoz

So that is already happening, no need to wait for anything.

The more basic question is, have there been any Polestar Volvos that is competitive with any AMG Mercs? Why would anyone choose a Polestar Volvo over anything with a three pointed star???

Polestar makes me think of a scantily clad woman with chest implants whirling on a pole in a gentleman's club...not that there's anything wrong with being a bimbo...
