2018 Ford Focus RS Will Reportedly Start At $41,995

2018 Ford Focus RS Will Reportedly Start At $41,995
If this figure is correct, it represents a $5,000 increase over the base price of the 2017 Focus RS, which starts at $36,995, after $875 for destination. The cost increase might seem significant at first glance, but remember that the 2018 Focus RS is a limited edition model with extra equipment for the new model year.

The 2018 Focus RS comes standard with the RS2 package, which is an option for $2,785 on the current model. It includes heated, leather-trimmed Recaro seats with eight-way power adjustment for the driver, heated exterior mirrors, a heated three-spoke steering wheel, and voice-activated navigation system. There’s also now carbon-fiber trim for the door handles, handbrake lever, and the bezel around the boost gauge.

Our initial plus expanded allotment of the RS did not require any money on the hood.

Because the Focus RS is not "known" like a GTI, the number of people who know what it is are few and among them even fewer are those who want one. My belief is that Ford is very near to fulfilling the orders of the handful of people who want an RS.

At some point, the diehard fanatics will have an RS and the average public will actually be able to see one that's when $42K base will be hard.

Our allotment had buyers up front, so the average Joe couldn't test drive an RS. We were aggressive in finding full-price buyers and went so far as to let it be known in Ford forums that we intended to sell at list.

Some Ford dealers in LA did a price gouge and buyers walked away which killed interest in their area and some were left with having to go below list. We offered at list price, no gouge, and were able to get more than our initial allotment because we were "successful" in retailing the car.

What some dealers don't understand is that when there is a hot new "something" you need stock and you need to make deals to prime the pump. I really think the RS is close to a saturation point and rethinking the ST and the RS with the next Focus is necessary.

I think there is a limit what people will pay for a hot hatch. 42 grand is above and beyond. At that price point an M230 becomes a viable alternative as does a 2018 Mustang GT or Camaro SS. Frankly I think Honda has the right formula with the Type R. It is a FWD hatch priced correctly at 34 grand. Now if dealers are smart they won't price gouge the Honda.
