Should Tesla Worry More About Apple Or Waymo?

Tesla Inc. may be facing more competition from other tech giants than initially feared, and one of the analysts that had been most bullish on the firm is growing increasingly worried.

Morgan Stanley’s Adam Jonas, who downgraded shares of Tesla in mid-May on risk of competition from the world’s largest tech companies, is reiterating his concerns after hearing Apple CEO Tim Cook outline the iPhone maker’s plans.

My understanding is that Apple is NOT working on building autonomous cars. They are working on building autonomous *software* for cars.

My understanding is that automobile manufacturers who are now working on autonomous cars, or who plan to make them, want to avoid Google's and Apple's autonomy software like the plague. They don't want someone else to control their vehicle, or possibly THEM, as a manufacturers.

So no, Tesla Motors does not need to worry about Apple being the reason for Tesla's demise. But like Aspy11 implies, the folks who are bidding up TSLA stock and who are eager to buy a new batch of TSLA shares every time Tesla Motors needs more money to keep operating, might one day not be such ardent believers. That's when the stock price will collapse, and when Tesla Motors can no longer rely on capital markets for their cash infusion lifeblood. At that point, the house of cards will collapse and they'll run out of operating cash.

Toyota could very easily buy Tesla and co-brand with Lexus. That is what I see as the "threat" to Tesla.

The house of cards will collapse... Just like Amazon and its 20 years of almost no profit operation.

Waymo, without a doubt. Apple is now many years out from a legitimate product and they will for sure not release anything unless they nail it. If the car isn't compelling they will cancel it like they did the Apple HDTV/UHDTV sets. Nvidia and Intel are also threats since they are developing platforms that other car companies can use (and Tesla themselves used MobileEye (Intel) for AP1 and Nvidia + proprietary software for AP2).
