Trump Says Buy American! - This Study Tells You What The MOST American Vehicles Really Are
Every year, a bunch of research teams announce the most American-built car in the world. For the last two years, embarrassingly, it was the Toyota Camry, which is built Kentucky. A lot of emphasis has been put on where a car is built since Donald Trump took office this year. President Trump wants to crack down on automakers that want to build cars in Mexico and Canada. Unfortunately, some so-called American cars like the Dodge Challenger and Charger are actually built in Canada. It's hard to tell if a car is truly American-built anymore.

The "buy American" plea doesn't make sense to me. Does it suggest that...

...Americans who prefer foreign brands are wrong?

...American vehicles are on par with the preferred foreign brands (or better), but American buyers are ignorant? (i.e., they just haven't done their research, so they don't know about the American offerings, which are better)

...Crafty foreigners have brainwashed Americans into liking foreign brands when in reality, there's no reason to like them?

...You should bite the bullet and buy crap, just to save American jobs?

...Unless America becomes isolationist and we shun foreign products, we cannot survive or thrive?

I'm just not clear *WHY* you should "buy American." I'm a believer in:
1) Do your due diligence
2) Buy according to what you believe works best for you.

That decision *might* be an American-made product. It might not.

American brands (FCA excluded) tend to have better reliability than German premium brands.

1 - FCA is NOT an American Company - the profits end up in Europe.

2 - There are basically two AMERICAN car companies - where the profits end up in the USA - and that is what Trump is really interested in - Tax Collections. And that is a reason to buy from an American Company. It supports our economy better.

3 - Those who do not subscribe to the idea of saving American Jobs - are generally those who have not lost theirs to India or China yet.

In Europe - you will find that a lot of people still buy cars from companies based in their country - regardless of where they actually make the cars - Germans buy VW, OPEl, VW and Mercedes - Italians buy lots of Fiats - The French buy Renault and PSA cars - and so on. The Japanese hardly buy foreign company cars. By actually considering American Cars - which are in many ways the equal to most other brands - you could bring back a number of higher paying jobs that the economy has lost - even if the unemployment rate is low.

MDarringer wrote “…American brands (FCA excluded) tend to have better reliability than German premium brands…”

According to this chart of reliability per brand (as at Feb 2017): http://www.consumerreports.org/cars-which-car-brands-make-the-best-vehicles-2017/

US brands hold the following spots (lower is better):
#8 Tesla
#10 Buick
#15 Lincoln
#17 Chevrolet
#18 Cadillac
#19 Chrysler
#21 Ford
#25 GMC
#27 Dodge
#30 Jeep
AVERAGE: 19

German Brands hold the following spots:
#1 Audi
#2 Porsche
#3 BMW
#20 Mercedes
#23 Volkswagen
AVERAGE: 9.8 (including the lowly VW!)

This data appears not to support you belief that US brands “tend to have better reliability than German premium brands.”

And CR's methodology is certainly not scientifically derived. CR like JD Power makes money by allowing manufacturers to use their endorsement. If you want to believe a faulty methodology, fine.

No, will continue to buy whatever car I like best with my money, regardless of where it is from.

I don't necessarily buy American. But when possible I like to buy from a similar nation like Japan or the Euro countries, which matches the same investment in people - education, health, infrastructure, retirement, workplace safety, etc. Anything else is gaming the system for corporate gain. The tax penalties will work - or at least are worth a shot.

I would not buy American out of patriotism, but because they are better products. Current American cars are quite compelling and are NOT at a disadvantage. The problem is snobbery and elitism that argues in place of real facts.
