Some Dealers Are Charging A $30K Premium For The Civic Type R
The 2018 Honda Civic Type R may start at $33,900 in the United States, but for many prospective customers, finding an example at such a price will be impossible. As a matter of fact, some dealerships are almost charging double the sticker price.

Members on the Civic X forum have compiled an extensive list of Honda dealerships across the United States that are charging premiums ranging from $1,500 up to $20,000 and beyond. Jalopnik claims to have spoken to a dealer that is charging $30,000 premium over the sticker price!

LMAO, if the dealer can find someone stupid enough to pay that for a civic, then more power to them.

Makes you wonder what kind of interest these dealers are getting even before the product is available. I don't know if the Type-R is going to be on limited production each year either so that may be playing a part.

Note that in Canada, Honda does not allow dealers to price vehicles higher than MSRP. I personally would buy a Subaru WRX or a Focus RS before this. Styling done by a 15 year old. As well as lots of fake/faux vents done in black plastic.

Manufacturers cannot control the prices dealers ask for cars but they CAN control their inventory. Some manufacturers reduce allocation for charlatans that boost prices like this.

A Manufacturer absolutely can dictate that their products are not sold over MSRP as charging huge premiums can damage the image of the automaker among the general population who may not appreciate that the dealer is setting the price and not Honda. This is done by many manufacturers in other industries the ones that come to mind are Rolex, Apple and Sony/Microsoft on their video game consoles.

You know NOTHING about the car sales industry. Moreover your "evidence" is illogical and asinine.

Manufacturers cannot set a price for dealers. It's patently illegal. When the dealer is independent of the manufacturer, the manufacturer can SUGGEST a retail price but they CANNOT mandate that price. Thus, if I want to sell a Fiesta for $100K I can sticker it at that level.

The manufacturer has 100% control over allotment so there is a quid pro quo if I want more of a hot car, but that is NOT the same as the manufacturer telling the dealer what the price WILL BE.

The hilarious thing is that I know of dealers who are refusing the forced inventory.

FCA is especially bad at putting cars on a truck and calling them sold.

What kind of an IMBECILE pays a $30,000 premium for a $35K Civic Honda.

It's pretty simple: If you want this car badly enough to pay $30K over list, then get it and enjoy it! But don't moan when someone who bought it at a discount a year later parks beside you are the Civic meet.

Its sad that you are so consumed with politics that you bring it up in an article regarding a Honda Civic - perhaps a mental health check is in order so you can enjoy life more?

@HoustonMidtown If this were true: "you don't trigger anything from me except the ignore button..." then you'd have said nothing. @BobM triggered you and he won.

I'll take a wild guess and assume there will be a greater allotment next year as 2019's. Further assuming Honda does come up with variants of the Civic R line there will be more to choose from. Also we will have to see what happens when Ford comes out with the new Focus platform. Perhaps with a smoother ride and updated interior the revised Focus RS will still be the top dog. Finally while the Subaru WRX is staying with the same platform until 2020 it will be interesting to see how Subaru has improved the ride and handling of the 2018 models. The manual transmission is also supposed to be improved as is the interior quality. I think in my opinion the hoopla over the type R is going to subside in about 6 to 9 months. If people can wait until March or June of 2018 my guess is there will be a greater allocation and lower mark ups. Anyone dumb enough to pay 30K over sticker price deserves what they get. When you start looking at that type of number and can afford it one would be better served to look at a Cayman, TTRS or an M2(even a GT350).I applaud Honda for their engineering out torque steer for a FWD car with this much power but it is still a FWD Hatchback. I will give it a little slack as the a Mini John Cooper Works can get up to 40K. Clearly the Type R is a significantly better car. However 40K would have to be the limit that anyone would or should pay for a FWD Hatch.

The hoopla will be stirred up largely by import tuner boys who are against wearing condoms. The rest of the creation will see this as a Civic and move on.

Waiting for the mid-cycle refresh that will likely be more toned down.
