Kia Says Stinger GT Has More Power Potential But Will Hold That In Reserve Right Now
It literally stole the show at Detroit last January and very soon the all-new Kia Stinger GT performance sedan will arrive in dealerships. Penned by former VW designer Peter Schreyer and engineered by former BMW M boss Albert Biermann, the Stinger GT is new territory for the South Korean brand. Assuming all goes well sales wise, what are the chances of an even more powerful version? Motoring.au recently asked Biermann that very question and, at least for now, a "stronger Stinger" or a "GTR" version isn’t planned.

This car will be a winner ONLY with strict price control. It may be aimed at the premium segment, but it will have to be priced near an Optima for the sake of sales. A V8 option for Mustang GT prices would have been mind altering.

Kia's mistake is that it looks like a, well, Kia. Too much Optima resemblance. Too much Genesis Coupe resemblance. If Kia really wants to be seen as an value-option to the Tier 1's, then they needed to create better separation from what Kias/Hyundais are already known to look like. Not to mention the Dodge Dart rear end. I see this having only modest success, akin to the Genesis coupe. It just doesn't look like a car that someone would want to pay upwards of $50k+ for the top-line. The Genesis G70 will have a bigger impact.

I think its a great looking car, and if the handling/performance end hold up it will be a great buy for enthusiasts. Unfortunately, the only way this car will generate good sales numbers is if it is priced near the Optoma as Mdarringer said...this way they can upsell other Kia sedan customers. The majority of (non-enthusiast) customers in this $40-50K price bracket are concerned about brand prestige first and foremost.
