Did Trump Overlook BMW's Job Creation Record When Labeling Them As A Bad Foreign Company?
Years before Donald Trump began promising to bring back good manufacturing jobs by getting tough with U.S. trade partners, such jobs have already been on the rise, largely thanks to foreign companies now cast as villains in Trump's narrative.

Reuters analysis of federal jobs data shows that out of 656,000 new manufacturing jobs created between 2010 and 2014, two thirds can be attributed to foreign direct investment.

More recent jobs numbers are not yet available, but over $700 billion in foreign capital has poured in over the last two years bringing total foreign investment to $3.7 trillion at the end of 2016, a world record.

The Administrator of the Republican Party speaks (and Tweets) emotionally on matters rather than factually. He blustered about preventing German automakers from selling "millions of cars" in the US, when in fact, the NEVER have! They sell fewer than a million a year (combined), and they account for only single-digit market share. They're hardly the threat he makes them out to be. With the exception of Volkswagen, the German brands sell high-priced, expensive to maintain premium or luxury vehicles that don't compete directly against American (GM/Ford/Chrysler/Tesla) vehicles. Whether we include or exclude VW -- a US non-event -- he's made much ado about nothing.

Aside from these facts, it's embarrassing to hear his beliefs when one knows that (a) some of the German brands' most popular models are manufactured ONLY in the US for the entire world's markets, and (b) US automakers (GM/Ford/Chrysler) set up shop in foreign countries to reduce manufacturing cost, and in doing so, eliminate domestic jobs. It's just business.

Honestly, some of the stuff the Administrator says (and Tweets) seems like it came from some of our more notorious list members, here on AutoSpies :-(

"You never fail to make shit up without any sources for your silly notions.

First off BMW still makes almost all their drive trains in Germany, and these are then assembled into vehicles here in the US. What Germany does is OVERCHARGE the US Company for these components, thus leaving most of the profits offshore. Financial companies usually are knows for using these and their know as a "Shell Game", but many large Manufacturers do it as well."

BMW has invested billions of dollars in that Spartanburg, SC plant, with another $600M coming as they prep for X7 production. It's now the largest BMW plant in the world, employs over 9000 people (with another 1000 coming), and exports over 70% of production to the other 140 countries BMW sells X models in. That plant makes BMW the largest U.S. vehicle exporter by value. Not GM, not Ford, not Tesla, not even Toyota or Honda. BMW is #1. If anyone is trying to spin this here, it's you, trying to turn billions of dollars invested, thousands of jobs created, and #1 exporting into some kind of negative.

@Bob why would you setup a factory in a country that won't buy your cars? Building Cadillacs in Germany for who? There isn't a demand because no one is interested, Conversely, huge demand for lux German cars.

"Another example of shooting your mouth off with no understanding of what you're even talking about" Really? Do you have another example?

Not sure why we're talking about Ford? This example is specifically about BMW. You're bemoaning unfairness because a premium German brand sells a lot of cars in the U.S. then builds a factory there creating tens of thousands of jobs, becomes the largest car exporter in that country and integral part of a State's economy.

So is it unreasonable for me to compare apples to apples? Trying to find an American premium brand doing the same. Now we're talking about Ford? Why don't we talk about China, cause Trump had that as a running theme throughout his campaign, strongly critised China for unfair trade policies and where has that gone?

All of a sudden the chairman of the communist party is "a very smart guy" and all of the talk about unfairness has disappeared, after one meeting. Now his attention is on Germany, this will also go no where. Just like the first 6 months of Presidency. Trying to defend the most mocked man in the world only makes you sound more hilarious. Stick to breitbart.

Cadillac is a premium brand, direct competition and an American brand. And I also asked why you were speaking about Ford exactly in that context, you still haven't answered other than to repeat that all back to me. Very strange. And it's Mr.Moonbat to you sport ;)

Are you saying Ford is a premium brand? Geez buddy, I mean they're great cars and all but premium is pushing it. Also, the more you keep posting the more you're arguing against yourself. I mean, Ford produces cars in Europe, they sell really well, as you've just proved, but if a German car company does that in America it's unfair? Might want to check your own shoes sport... or join the GOP race in 3 years.

Also, not sure why you keep posting links, do you think people will be using them? Especially a link to a competitor car news site like Jalopnik. Lastly, you should watch your language, no need to curse to make yourself feel better, I mean we're all adults here right?... right?

Interesting - Trump as president seems to have forgotten that he owns or owned: Rolls Royce, Lamborghini, Mercedes, Maybach etc.

He is definitely a hypocrite but I don't think he has the intelligence or conscience to care. He's the most mocked man in the world.
