Hyundai Kills The Genesis In The UK Market

The BMW 5 Series, Mercedes E-Class and Jaguar XF rival was offered in the UK exclusively with a 3.8-litre V6 petrol engine. This high-spec lone model cost from £50,705, allowing the more comprehensive ranges of its rivals to enter the market with more affordable base prices.

Hyundai has launched the Genesis brand as a luxury vehicle division in several markets, where the Genesis saloon has been renamed the G80. The firm is also developing a smaller Genesis G70 (pictured below), which will sit below the G80  in the range. No date has been set for when the Genesis brand will make it to Britain, and some sources expect it to take several years, despite earlier, more optimistic predictions.

Given the bigotry against Asian cars in Europe, this is a wise move.

Yes and no. Toyota, Nissan and Mazda do relatively well there. You can also see a few Lexus and Infinitis, specially in Western Europe

They are still disparaged as being lesser cars despite having better build quality, reliability, and durability.

Not surprising. Genesis brand needs to be closed and rebadge them as Hyundai.

Not as black and white as the headline would make it appear. "Genesis" will forge forward but will lead with an SUV in the UK. I definitely agree with the author in that the G80 is a very American-taste car.

What kind of silly-azz comment is that? "...very American-taste..." Very elitist in undertone. In case you've missed Hyundai's entire history, the brand has benchmarked the top European/UK brand flagships....so they can offer a global model.

Is the BMW 5/7er, M-B E/S-class, Audi A6/7/8, Lexus GS/LS, Jaguar XJ, etc meant for only the American market? Throwin shade....

Oh, shut it with the "elitist" bullsh*t. The Genesis/G80 is a very competent sedan at a reasonable price, but lacks in areas of drivability that its European competition tends to excel. Why do you think the Lexus ES is one of the best-selling cars in the US on a consistent basis?

“The Genesis of today is more of an American car, but there are models coming that are more suitable for our market, such as the crossover and SUV”...

What? I don't know how I feel about that comment. Genesis sedans are MORE for the US...huh?! So ugh...what market has kept CUV/SUV industry booming since like the beginning of time?!

IO think it is too soon for Genesis - from Hyundai. If Toyota had brought out Lexus twenty years earlier - it would have died as most people would not have been willing to spend PREMIUM money for a Japanese car. The fact is - most Hyundais are sold with huge discounts - they have not been established as a reliable - desirable car maker - YET. THere are still people who remember that Hyundai competed with YUGO for the low end sales. While today's Hyundai cars are indeed more reliable than in the past - it will take time for that to be consolidated into the marketplace where they can sell cars for near list price. ANd that will be when Genesis will have a chance. Today - Hyundai often competes directly with BMW - whose dealers are discounting to keep up their Volume - but no one I know would rather have a Genesis over the "real thing".
