Awhile ago I had the pleasure of working with European engineers who had little respect for US regulations as they viewed them as laws passed by technically ignorant lawyers elected by a folks who today would be called "snow flakes". For years Euro diesel laws were less strict than the US, and left room for manufacturer "interpretation". That appears to be the issue with the FCA/VM diesel where the Italian engineers treated the US like Europe and felt it was all OK. The trial will be interesting.
