Sibling Cooperation: Audi Outsourced The New S8's Hybrid V8 Powerplant To Porsche

The Audi S8 gained a lot of attention when the German auto manufacturer decided to drop the Lamborghini Gallardo's 5.2-liter V-10 under the hood. The engine was plenty potent and turned the massive luxury sedan into a rocket ship. However, the time has now come to drop another donor engine under the hood of the all-new Audi S8.

According to automotive outlet Evo, Audi has decided to utilize Porsche's 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V-8 currently found in the Panamera. The Panamera Turbo S makes 550 horsepower from the spunky V-8, but the real power comes in with the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid. The dual-motor powertrain makes a combined 680 horsepower—plenty to shuttle you from the country club to the yacht in record time. According to Porsche, the 550 horsepower Panamera Turbo hits 60 mph in just 3.2 seconds.

Proof read your title Agent009. It makes more sense that Audi S8 outsourced the V8 engine FROM Porsche - not TO. It would be a travesty if Porsche starts using Audi-developed engine.

Well, it would not be the first time an Audi engine powered a Porsche...

If you mean the lesser V6 and diesel engines for the Cayenne they you may be right, but I was talking about thoroughbred F6 or V8 and their Turbo variants. You need to read things in context.

That may help this sleeper in the engine department but in looking at the car again (article's picture inserted above) I can't see anything but a larger circa 2014 red A4.

From what I have read/heard this TT V6/V8 engine family (variants used in the Panamera, Audi S4/5, RS5, Audi A8 and likely to proliferate across the Audi lineup) was jointly developed by Audi and Porsche. For marketing reasons of maintaining Porsche exclusivity they will never openly admit that.

This is almost like claiming that there are VWs with Audi engines in them.
While it is clear that there are some engines that were developed for specific brands in the VW world - the Porsche flat engines are an example - It would be economically unfeasible for VW to maintain separate engine development units that produce competing engines from the block up for ALL or even most of its brands. Just as VW has begun to use Platforms between the brands - it is clear that there will be combined production of many basic engine "Platforms" - and while it remains possible for some of the brands to then develop the top ends differently - the blocks and configurations will be universal. In this case - this V8 was announced to be produced for Porsche, Audi, and Bentley.

Also note - Porsche uses an Audi Diesel Engine in the Panamera.
