The Pope Chooses The People's Car For His Latest Limosine
His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI is about to take delivery of a Volkswagen Phaeton for his next Pope Mobile. The model in particular will be a black long-wheelbase version complete with a 450hp 6.0L W12 engine, which has been modified for comfort, privacy and security. This is just another vehicle to add to the list of high-end metal that has joined the Pontiff’s collection, an assortment that could easily rival the garage of any rapper.

Previously, rivals BMW and Audi fought over who would have the official limousine for the Pope during his recent visit to Bavaria, and a compromise had to be made. This time round its Vdub in the house, as the Pope is going with the people’s car.

i doubt the pope had any say in this and would he really be getting caught up in material posessions, and of all things luxury cars?

"It's not a success here because we have the Lexus LS."

What a stupid comment! It's about the A8, duh! Most anyone who can afford the Phaeton can afford the A8-- and the Audi is just a better version of it!

"To compete with vehicles such as the Jaguar XJ, BMW 7 Series, Mercedes-Benz S-Class, Lexus LS 430 and even VW Group's own Audi A8 L..."

Gee, looks like a lot more cars than the LS.

And no, VW set out for its primary competitor to be the Mercedes-Benz S-Class.

And when did I say it was a good idea? Quite stupid, but the Phaeton is a very luxurious car. Right car, wrong badge. And Audi improves upon this "right car" even more by taking 700lbs off of its curb weight and making the interior simpler and even more elegant.

Not at all. I am just mad at the people who post BULLSHIT comments like:

"VW doesn't deserve this honour..."

WHY?

VW worked hard on the Phaeton and they at least deserve to be recognized in this sense. An important spiritual leader choosing a VW product over more prestigeous offerings from Audi, BMW or MB etc.

I might have, yes.

But it is highly unlikely the Pope would consider an LS. Most likely, that Phaeton is some V6 TDI model. The Vatican watches costs too you know. :p

It says in the article that the Phaeton is a LWB W12, BMW530i.

Will-

Why does everything need to be a Lexus? Give another brand some credit for a change. VW has just as much prestige as any other brand, but in a very different sense. Define "prestige".

Huu76- You forget the Pope's cars must be bullet and bomb proof. I am not aware of these features on any Lexus. MB, BMW, Audi, and VW all make bullet proof and bomb proof vehicles from the factory.

Unless Lexus makes such versions they are ill-suited as a limo for any high profile individual.

Okay, I'm tired of the VW bashing crap. The only merely average VW is the Jetta. The rest are fantastic cars and lead in their respective segments (except the Phaeton).

The one question mark here is what segments they are actually in. The Jetta is more expensive than the Rabbit, Corolla, Civic, etc, but less expensive and not as big as the Camry/Accord class. The Passat is a bit more money than the Camry and Accord, but most cars in that class option up fast, so I'd say that it's more in that class than the 3 Series/A4 class. The Touareg is far more luxurious than the outdated Highlander and pedestrian Pilot, but it's not meant to be a "riding on a cloud" crossover like the RX350, so it doesn't have any real main competitors. The closest I can think of in terms of price, power and prestige as the Infiniti FX35.
