Just as a reminder, when Dieselgate broke and the investigation into VW began, investigators discovered fraudulent practices beyond just the diesel cheat device. Discoveries included, but were not limited to:

(1) VW falsifying fuel economy tests by replacing lubricating oils with diesel fuel. This reduces friction, gets better fuel economy, but destroys components by robbing them of essential lubrication supplied by real oil. The components easily last long enough to complete the fuel economy test, but they deliver grossly unrealistic numbers.

(2) VW also taped up seams and closed body panel and undercarriage gaps that caused wind turbulence. This also increased fuel economy numbers illegitimately.

(3) Emissions are related to fuel economy, so as fuel economy was fraudulently increased, emissions were fraudulently decreased.

(4) VW was and is in hot water with countries that tax vehicle sales and/or ownership (annually) based on their emissions. Because VW fraudulently understated emissions, these countries were cheated out of tax revenue. The charge against VW is tax fraud. Pretty serious stuff.

All these things were reported, made the news here in North America, but were quickly forgotten because "big bad Dieselgate." The fraud at VW is epic and systemic. By the way, VW owns Audi, so it's no surprise that Audi is entangled in fraud, too.

Actually - I would expect that ANY VW vehicle that has those engines involved would have the same restriction.

TomM: You are correct. The additional fraud (aside from the diesel cheat device) was not limited to diesel engines. It affected VW across the board. It was a systemic "way of life" at VW.
