California And Florida Buyers Still Prefer Luxury Cars Over SUV's
Depending where you live, it’s possible the shift away from luxury cars to luxury SUVs is dramatically more apparent than America’s nationwide figures suggest.

In 48 of 50 states, luxury utility vehicles outsell luxury cars. In seven states, premium brand utility vehicles form more than 65 percent of the premium market.

But according to Edmunds, the two states in which luxury cars still outperform luxury utility vehicles account for 31 percent of America’s luxury SUV market.

It could be a variety of reasons. While demographics (older drivers where getting into an SUV/CUV is too much of a strain) play a role, I would say the lack of variable weather (rain/snow/sleet/ice/hail/storms) and the lack of 4 distinct seasons plays a bigger role.

In the case of having less snow/ice condition weather in most areas - that I do agree completely with. A lot of SUVs are sold based on their ability in wintry driving.(Maybe the reality of their ability is not as good - but they sell it anyway). However - there is one thing about being old that none of you younger readers will understand - in many cases you simply cannot get into or out of the suvs (and mini-vans - and other raised vehicles) without real problems. I have no problems - but I almost have to pick up my mom and place her in the seat of my Mini-van - even holding on to a grab bar - she does not always have the strength to pull herself up without help.

ANd yes - I do have a home in Florida - and yes - I acknowledge the fact that there are a lot of senior drivers there too. THere are fewer jobs in Florida that pay enough for younger folks to afford a new SUV as well.

Alternative perspectives:
- Luxury SUV. Best of both world.
- The luxury car might not be their only car.

Probably because those states aren't full of soccer mom suv driving customers.

Obviously SUVs are more prone to tip over during earthquakes / hurricanes, so their lack of volume in CA and FLA should not be a surprise to AutoSpies devotees.

With 30m people in California, I think there are a fair number of families, Mom's, kids and soccer teams.
