RUMOR: The Plot THICKENS — German Automakers May Have Colluded In Dieselgate Scandal

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - Germany's carmakers VW, BMW, Audi, Porsche may have colluded to fix the prices of diesel emissions treatment systems using industry committees, German magazine Der Spiegel reported on Friday.

Germany's cartel authority declined to comment on the report, which sent car stocks tumbling...

..."This new chapter in the diesel saga needs to be taken seriously," Evercore ISI analyst Arndt Ellinghorst said in a note. "Our conclusion is that there might be a risk of several hundred millions or even low billions..."

Diesel is a pointless technology anyway, so we should thank the Germans and their criminality for burying diesel.

Until the price of gasoline comes even close to the cost of Diesel Fuel in Europe - there will continue to be a need for diesel engines there for decades. ANd - to this date - we still have no real replacement for a diesel engine for Large Trucks and Locomotives. Electrification of all rails is not truly feasible - and there still is no long distance way to replace diesel in Semi's with Electricity - where the range and charging time costs would be prohibitive. The idea that EVs will be able to take over the car market is NOT clear - and the failure of the Bolt, Volt, Prius and other Hybrids to make a real dent in the sales of cars (Which themselves are not selling) says that the consumers are not ready to concede the market to EV makers.

(1) diesel fuel is subsidized
(2) hybridization is the answer

Those damned Russians. First they destroyed Hillary and now they've destroyed diesel. What's next? The butchering of snowflake rainbow unicorns for their succulent meat?

MDarringer, I don't know if you're trolling or just wacked in the head. Conservatives are supposed to hate hyvrids. I certainly can't stand them. They're useless and they leave a bigger footprint than diesel ever did. You can't get the same torque, power and fuel economy out of a hybrid than a diesel.

I'm keeping my ML350. The EPA can screw itself.

Incoherent? Non sequitur? Irrelevant? Yes, you are.

Mdarringer is right. Diesel is essentially dead in passenger cars within 10 years (it may still have a role in the largest SUVs and pickups). It is pretty clear at this point that it is very difficult to cost effectively meet emissions standards with Diesel engines.
Paris, and likely London, Madrid, Mexico City and Athens will ban diesel vehicles by 2025. Once Diesel is largely out of the picture, hybrids are the only way to meet fuel economy standards.

Hybrids will not remotely get the power & power delivery that you would.be accustomed to in a diesel. Not for a while.

An E320 CDI still averages 48 mpg combined, cruising at freeway speeds without any issue, while a hybrid struggles to get that, especially on a long distance trip. Real world tests have proven that diesel still beat hybrid. Also, the cost of diesel is still less in the long run. This is nothing more than a government forced maneuver, which is ridiculous in any sense and there's no justification for it.

BS! It depends ONLYon the output of the electric motor.

Check Mercedes Benz forums like mbworld & benzworld. Check Motor Trend. I believe they did a test of an E250 vs. a Prius and the diesel beat it out overall. Better power, better economy and better range. Plus considerably cheaper fuel. Also overall, the reliability of a diesel is considerably greater than a hybrid, especially based on my personal experience. I've never seen a Toyota go in for so many problems, especially oil leaks @ 50K miles than a Prius.
