Both GM And Ford Only Make Profit From Sales In The US
For General Motors Co. and Ford Motor Co., home is where the profits are. That's a source of heartburn as U.S. auto sales stall.

Ford CFO Bob Shanks put it plainly when explaining the company's quarterly financial results Wednesday: "Effectively, every dollar we earned in the automotive segment was earned in North America." It's a similar story at GM, which reported all but about $200 million of adjusted profit came from the region.

What about China?

Europe simply has too many car companies, too much overcapacity, and too much stupid thinking for most of the companies there to really make a killing with their bread-and-butter cars.

PSA responded to the excess capacity and too many brands by creating a new brand--DS--and then buying the crapstorm known as Opel.

VW has THREE mainstream brands that duplicate each other. Idiocy.

It's fairly evident that GM is likely going to be taken over by SAIC. When GM got into a bind with GMDAT, it gave more power to SAIC in exchange for money to throw at the former Daewoo operation. Dumping Opel makes GM more attractive to a buyer. Dumping GM Korea is obviously next on the list. With China so important in GM's future and with SAIC so intertwined, SAIC will want to own the ship.

So the European market with all of its restrictions is actually more competitive than ours in the US, offers more variety and better choices?

@vdiv If you think overcapacity is competitive, then yes. As for variety VW=Skoda=Seat, Peugeot=Citroen=DS...Ripe for implosion

That's ok, they have to compete, do not have a stranglehold. Here the market is GM's and Ford's regardless, can produce junk and people buy it as they don't know any better.

@vdiv except that the data does not show that Ford and GM are producing junk. They are reasonably equal to Toyota/Honda/Hyundai/Kia and worlds better than VW and Nissan.
