BMW Says It Never Cheated On Emissions Tests, However Recalls All Euro 5 Diesel Models Anyway

Media reports have been stirring up the Dieselgate pot, alleging Volkswagen – as well as Daimler and BMW – have been involved for decades in secret dealings akin to a cartel.

German newspaper Der Spiegel has quoted a letter sent by Volkswagen to German competition authorities and reported a new investigation has been opened into practices of Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi, and Porsche. Apparently, the companies had been involved in secret meetings since the 1990s to fix the prices of diesel emissions treatment systems – among others. BMW is at the moment the only carmaker to officially react to the accusations, through an official statement.

If anything, I'm inclined to believe what BMW says BECAUSE they are getting out in front of this. Bringing vehicles in to double-check them is good PR. We'll see if there is more too this as details come out.

Audi is the originator of all the software cheating and let's look at Audi. It has an inferiority complex because it's not at the BMW/Mercedes level and Audi is not content to be the German Buick. That inferiority complex made them overcompensatory and that made them cheat.

One does not spend a few Hundred Million Dollars to recall a group of cars because they have NO problem - however I can envision then not having the problem that they are accused of having - but having something else that BMW wants covered up. After all - they do not need to bring in ALL the cars involved to discover if something is wrong - I am sure they know the version of the software in the cars and what was in it.

VW was the one caught with cheating software- we have no idea if they originated the idea - or if the problem is restricted to them but all indications are that there is a common thread that links all of these manufacturers = Bosch. AND - I believe it is possible that the cheat could be in all their software - simply not known by other manufacturers OR not implemented.

@TomM Wrong! You would recall cars IF you can spin it for PR.

@Tom the investigation found that the source code for the cheating software that later made its way to Bosch came from an Audi employee
