Everyone LOVES The Tesla Screen. WHY Are So Many Other Companies RESISTING Giving The People What They Want?
Regardless of what you think about Tesla, there's definitely one thing that cannot be disputed. The electric vehicle manufacturer did one thing that is undoubtedly one of the greatest moves by a car maker.

It installed that MASSIVE screen in the center stack and it has captivated, well, just about everyone.

Anytime Agent 001 or I have been at a Tesla store, we've noticed people are hyperfocused on the screen. Forget about the environmental benefits, forget about the exterior styling or how powerful the Tesla vehicles are. People are always talking about the size of the screen and the user experience.

This begs the question: Why hasn't this made its way into other vehicles?

The closest we've got to a Tesla-inspired screen in another car is Volvo's Sensus infotainment system. But, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize that monitor is much, much smaller than Tesla's massive 17-inch screen.

What say you, Spies? Why are so many other companies RESISTING giving the people what they want?

Just wait until they have to pay for a replacement out of pocket. Then let's hear what they have to say then.

Yikes! That's what they will say. Then they will pay for it and still enjoy it.

The replacement is $2k on the S/X and somewhere around $500-1k on the 3. Lexus once tried to charge me $5k to fix a 6 inch screen used for navigation.

Everyone loves it?

This is NONSENSE

When Saturn offered all of its instruments in a center pod over the console between the seats - people UNIVERSALLY hated it.

I have yet to see ANYONE who has not complained about the dashboard of the Model 3 - the idea that EVERYONE likes it - is therefore already Disproved - and I do not like it either. I admit I would not buy an EV - because of my long distance driving which would favor a Hybrid at most - but not having the Speedo directly in front of me is a deal breaker for me - I have been driving TOO LONG to have to go looking for it somewhere else.

Now - add something NO ONE has mentioned - the screen is NOT protected from the sun - not only because of where it is - but also because there is NOTHING covering it from the top. Add in that Flat panel displays are not as good when looking from side angles as well. On a sunny day - I can see the glare making the screen impossible to see.

Right on. The screen may be sexy, but its not practical as a control device as Honda found out. Think of all the distracted Tesla drivers weaving all over the road trying to make basic adjustments that a knob/button could do without even looking at it. Maybe the "everyone" in the title refers to a market sub-segment that is interested in buying a Tesla. How big that segment really is remains to be determined. And reservations aren't firm sales.

Everyone I know that actually owns one (including myself) - loves the screen. I hate going back to a traditional car any time I travel.

The big pros are having a ton of real estate which comes in handy for maps, being able to customize the screen layout, and having functionality intuitively laid out instead of needing 100 different buttons. It also has been improved over time with a faster, better UI and new features--something that would be very difficult to do without the screen.

And to answer the question of why other's haven't duplicated it yet... putting the screen in the car is easy, writing the software to manage it is very hard. Some cars are putting larger screens in, but the UI is never as good as what Tesla has done.

You can see in the new Panamera and A8 there is a lot of LCD. It may not look just like the Tesla, but glass cockpits are here and now.

Not good enough! I want a 36" CRT non touch screen TV monitor in mine and crank windows.

I generally like Tesla, but agree with the naysayers on that giant screen. I would prefer differntiated knobs and buttons for at least the major functions. Always having to take your eyes off the road to perform normal functions while driving is not a good idea. However once it is all automated, that big screen can be fun for other activities.

Really what possibly needs to be adjusted regularly, if at all while driving?

Vette71Vette71 - 8/4/2017 10:31:27 PM

Just a few. Navigation view as one gets closer to the end point or a complex intersection and wants a closer view, or a broader view to get a look at traffic congestion ahead and pick a different route (very handy when driving around NYC). HVAC settings for comfort or changing weather (fogged up windows, ice, etc) Music system volume or to skip tunes you don't like, or pick a different station.(see Honda complaints) Button to start and stop a phone call, even with voice recognition. Adjust cruise control settings for different roads. Etc, etc.

Everything you just described can be done on the Tesla steering wheel without taking your eyes off the Road, except for Nav. If you are adjusting Nav, then you are planning to take your eyes off the road anyway to look at the Nav.

This is the classic innovation dilemma that legacy manufacturers face. It takes a rethinking the design, which eludes established companies. The FUD forces only incremental changes.

Sometimes engineers innovate to be different or do something just because they can. Never mind the customer who finds it complex and less appealing than what they are accustomed to. Honda with its screen radio controls or all the manufacturers who went with layered menu LCD controls or electronic gear shifts that don't provide a tactical sense of what gear you are in are all examples of designs that didn't work. Prediction; Tesla will add controls and a separate screen to the Model 3 in the future to get more customers.

In the near future, the Model 3 will be a self-driving car and it won't matter. I would have preferred a second screen like the S, but understand it won't be relevant within a few years.
