Mercedes Plans To Challenge The Panamera With A 800HP 4 Door Sportscar Of It's Own

This, the Mercedes-AMG GT four-door, will become the brand's most potent series production model when it goes on sale in September 2018.

Available in pure combustion engine or top-spec hybrid form, the future Porsche Panamera rival is predicted to have up to 800bhp, making it about 223bhp more potent than AMG GT R. Only the 1000bhp Project One will beat it for output, but that car will be a limited-run model.

So, a CLS with a different body...

The AMG 4-door looks so much better than the Panamera. Saw several Panameras on the road this weekend and they just disappear in traffic. That's why I liked the previous version so much - it had character and presence, no matter what all the haters said about its styling (which I had zero problem with). Even the Tesla Model S looks better.

So isnt the AMG GT4 essentially competing against the CLS-classs?

The CLS came first. Then the Panamera came as competition to the CLS. Now the AMG GT4 will compete against the Panamera.

Yes and no. If you look at pricing and power, the Panamera covers the gamut from the non-AMG CLS up to what the AMG GT4 will presumably be. The non-Turbo Panameras essentially are up against the CLS, including AMG. While the Turbo Panameras will be up against the AMG-GT4.

There are only a few buyers here who could actually afford such a vehicle - few will be made - and only to take Bragging rights away from other vehicle. AS Autonomous features begin to take control of the car - limiting speed - acceleration, spacing, merging - etc - the inability to actually use Engine power of this magnitude will signal the end of that "performance car" industry. If all cars are limited to the same on road performance - why buy a car that can go that fast ONLY on a off public road race course?

Like it or not - we are near the end of the "Performance Car" era. WHen speed limit signs are read by electronics in the car - and they actually LIMIT the speed the car can go - it will result in greatly reduced accidents - and deaths due to high speed accidents. AND the public will not be given a choice by the insurance industry to avoid these controls - even if the government allows some leeway. The result will be cars that are essentially "Rail cars" without the rail - that simply go the same as the other car in front of it.
