Toyota's European sales rise 17 percent in September
Brisk sales of SUVs, the premium Lexus brand and small cars helped Toyota Motor Corp.'s European car sales rise 17 percent last month to 110,306 units, its best-ever September.

That brought sales in the first three quarters to 870,079 units, a rise of 12 percent, the automaker said in a statement today.

Its market share in Europe advanced to 5.8 percent in the first nine months from 5.3 percent in the year-earlier period. Its September share reached 6.4 percent.

Toyota aims to sell 1.1 million units in Europe this year, including 48,000 Lexus vehicles.

Lexus brand nine-month sales nearly doubled to 39,906 units as it took on European premium brands on their home turf. Hybrid versions made up nearly 27 percent of Lexus sales, while diesels powered 23 percent of the new Lexus cars sold.

It cited strong September sales of the Toyota Yaris small car -- up 18 percent year on year; the RAV4 SUV -- up 31 percent; and new Aygo minicar, whose volume surpassed 10,000 units.

Sales of the hybrid Prius hit a monthly record 2,895 units.

Britain remained Toyota's biggest market in Europe through September, followed by Germany, Italy and France.

Russia, Toyota's fifth-largest European market, saw the best growth rate, with sales up 53 percent to 73,268 units.

...while diesels powered 23 percent of the new Lexus cars sold. ...

========================================

Eh...there is only Lexus diesel, the IS220d. The article makes it sound as if Lexus has a diesel engine for every model.

I'm surprised that "SUV sales are brisk". From a European mentality, the RX lacks a diesel.

Don't bother with him Will, he's just upset that Toyota is becoming a global icon and Lexus will soon be international. German car fans are upset because then they will have nothing to bash Lexus with.

Did I sound UPSET in my post, LexusIS350? I don't think so.

Stop the trolling. The Lexus IS220d is still outclassed by the German competition on their home turf. Do some research and look at how poorly equipped the IS220d comes compared to the IS250. The IS220d doesn't even come with an automatic transmission option, or the comprehensive safety package of the IS250.

You're the one who is supposed to be upset...

Toyota is for old people and if you look on the parts for a lexus there is also a toyota logo on it so its better to buy a toyota cause it's the same car but cheaper....

The LEXUS in Switzerland in 3 times more than last year(diffcult country for non european brands, very oriented to German cars ). AND NO LEXUS has TOYOTA LOGO on it. I'm also living in Europe and what is saying above is absolutely not true!!!
If you don't like a brand this is a choice but please do not give false informations to others. LEXUS is growing up in Europe and it's great for competition. It will push our brands to do even better than now! Fortunately the competition exists and it's great for us for all cusumers!

So....Lexus is way up, hybrids are way up, Toyota is having success selling their diesels. All these areas where Euro fanboys have been saying Toyota fails. I love just sitting back and watching the numbers roll in month after month.

You guys are pathetic--making a huge deal out of a small increase and acting as though this is proof that Toyota will take over. Get real.

The German brands are always improving and won't just let Toyota outsell them.

Will, it doesn't take a genius to figure out that Toyota will ALWAYS outsell the German brands worldwide because they're cheaper.

The German brands are primarily premium brands globally and have the appropriate prices.

Give it a rest already.

it doesn't take a genius to figure out that going up against cars equipped with JAPANESE ELECTRONICS, the german cars with 3rd rate electrics will be back at the dealers FAR MORE OFTEN.

price is NOT an issue. RELIABILITY is, to get happy repeat customers and EVER GROWING SALES.

mercedes itself has admitted to some "quality issues" and attempted to foist the blame onto their suppliers.

but they remain ultimately responsible for everything they install in their vehicles.

this should NOT be surprising at all.

on SEVERAL articles i've read now, even in germany, toyota and honda owners rank among the MOST SATISFIED.

the german big 3 do rank high among the most ASPIRED TO, but they rank as low as 10 - 15 positions BELOW the japanese majors with regard to satisfied owners.

i wonder how many of the euro fanboys actually OWN the unreliable, high maintenance machines they praise? they probably merely ASPIRE to own them, but have not had much experience in ownership.

the big sales gains are likely coming from HIGHLY SATISFIED toyota owners in europe re-upping. and spreading the word amongst their friends and relatives.

German vehicles are premium vehicles!LOL!Like VW made in mexico! All VW jettas in the U.S are made in Mexico and the quality is as cheap as a Chevy Aveo!
This is the begining of Toyota's Global take over!!!
German automakers better not drop the ball ,or Toyota could overtake them in sales like the big three of the U.S!!!

For me, it's about the cars themselves. Never mind how many they sold. That is irrelvant to everyone other than the respective manufacturers themselves.

I know of many relative low-volume cars which are excellent vehicles and are in no way 'inferior'.
