WOW! Security VIDEO Captures BMW 4-Series Convertible's Seven-story Plunge In Austin
When I've parked at business parks or even some high-rise apartments, I've always been a bit extra careful in the parking garages. That's because they're often poorly lit and far too narrow.

And then there's some examples where you park and your vehicle is pointing outside with a large gap and not much to stop the vehicle should you overdo it. I've always wondered what would happen should you go through and, well, for one woman in Austin she had the unfortunate experience of living it.

According to the driver of a BMW 4-Series Convertible that took a seven story plunge, her foot slipped off the brake. From there the car went through protective cables.

From the security camera footage, her 4-Series appears to be completely vertical as it makes impact. The force was so strong the car turned over and came to a rest on its roof. Although the driver suffered severe injuries, she did make it out alive — thankfully — and her account can be heard in the second video clip below.

Be safe out there, Spies!

This is the second time this year this has happened at this downtown Austin parking garage.

Bowmer, who lives in Cedar Park, says the wires that serve as walls in the parking garage made her “freak out.”

Two comments:

(1) When a similar accident happens twice in a year, it's a good reason to suspect a design flaw that allows such mishaps to happen.

(2) The fact that the driver survived is a testimony to how well-built today's cars are! According to Newton's 9.8 M/s^2 gravitational acceleration formula, she was going about 64 feet/second at time of impact, or about 43 mph into an unyielding barrier (the ground). That means virtually ALL of the impact's energy was absorbed by the car. Wow!

No kidding, WOW. Could not agree more, cars are really well built today.

Just insane to watch and to think she's still ok after that

It's truly amazing.

I recommend the garage install a giant foam pad in the street to catch the next car that shoots off the roof.

Haha this actually made me laugh.

of course she plans to sue.. they all do... we have parking garages like that all around me and never once he we had an issue

I think it is insane for the operator of the Parking garage to already agree to add more barriers - and eventually re-engineer them. At least the woman admitted she caused the accident - foot slipped off brake - won't be a total loss for the parking garage. I assume TheSTEVE message about design flaws is tongue in cheek.

Clearly - the problem is not the parking garage - it is speed again. If agent 00r actually obeyed the recommended speed in the garage - mostly 5 mph - he would not have any problem. Nor would she - at 5mph she would have had plenty of time to get back on the brakes.

i agree with you but even if I am traveling at 5 mph, most people are not and you must account for that.

TomM: When I wrote "...it's a good reason to **SUSPECT** a design flaw..." [emphasis added here], I was not saying that light-heartedly.

I do NOT suggest that civil engineers should prevent every conceivable accident. However, when I notice that twice in the past year a pedestrian was killed at this specific intersection, in *my* mind, that suggests it might be a good idea to take a closer look at that intersection to see if there is anything inherent there that contributed to those deaths. Same principle with this parking lot a a repeat of a "freak" accident. It's *my* opinion on this matter.
