All Sides Locked And Loaded As NAFTA Talks Begin Today
Negotiators from Canada, Mexico and the United States are aiming for an "ambitious" first round of trade talks, a senior U.S. official said on Tuesday, as the countries try to fast-track a deal to modernize the 23-year-old pact by early next year.

The United States Trade Representative official, speaking on a conference call with reporters, said the sides would begin to merge proposed texts during the first round of meetings in Washington.

It will be fine. The initial statement by the US trade team was very sensible and well thought out. Compromise will be required on all sides to reach a workable agreement. The current NAFTA agreement will be tweaked. Adults are in the room, not Trump. These people are all trade professionals trying to work out the best deal possible.

Certainly all trade agreements need regular review. This deal was flawed at the beginning and it does not hurt to review and improve it hopefully to everyone's benefit. Agree with the professionals in the room comment 100% :)

May I say that I enjoy your comments often.

I believe the problem will still be - that the people of USA and CANADA still want the cars that are made in Mexico - at those prices - when in fact they cannot be made in the USA and CANADA at those prices. So - this will be a real test. Somehow - I am still expecting that talk of the "wall" will also be a problem though.

TomM. You are correct. Manufactured goods (cars, washing machines etc) will indeed be a very strong and tough sticking point for the US team. Trump has promised the American people jobs and good jobs come from making things. As was pointed out today by the Canadian team when energy trade is removed the USA runs a $25B+ trade SURPLUS with Canada on manufactured goods and very balanced trade overall. I cannot speak for Mexico. However I do now a great many automakers have built plants there while others still (like Toyota) are also building car plants in the USA. Canada is losing out on this front even though it is cheaper to make a car here than in the USA (exchange rate). NAFTA is not a disaster, but it is an old agreement and it needs to be updated.

Canada has the drama school teacher, spoiled "dirty oil" trust fund moron "Mohammed Trudeau" who thinks government "budgets balance themselves" and is going to "grow the (Canadaian) economy from the heart out" whom only got elected because 1) he is good looking and 2) Canadians are fucking idiots/politically stupid.

What could possibly go wrong with George Soros' little man-boy puppet? We're fucked!!! I miss Harper and common sense.

Q- Trudeau is not on the negotiating team. Neither is Trump. Just trade professionals and industry experts. It will be a very long negotiation with 3 sides at the table. Dancing with an elephant means you have to keep time to the beat and not get stepped on. Hard to do.

Trump and Tru-dope aren't on the panel but they DO advise the key issues and Trump is a master negotiater whom took 200M of Daddy's money and built a pretty large nest egg which is a head start but still an impressive accomplishment regardless if you like him or not.

Day 1 and the US is demanding big changes and good for them as team Trump is trying to do what is best for Americans not what is best for the world, Mexico blah blah blah. This is what good government does and not the asshole Liberal government of Canada who are now trying to sneak in a new tax for professionals like me whom will raise my taxes up to 70% on investment and dividend income.

Hong Kong has no corporate tax on your world wide income and will be my new base as I close my Canadian operations and move manufacturing to the US where they want, welcome and nurture small business rather than try to rape them for every penny they can so they can pay US solder killing terrorists $10.5M because we hurt his feelings.

Fuck Canada and Trudeau and time to build northern wall to keep all the Jihadists Canada openly welcomes and wants. Way to decimate the once best country in the world.

It would be nicer still to see posters express their thoughts and opinions without resorting to insults, tirades and berating other points of view. Disagreement is fine, but don't lose you mind over it. Best is likely to not check the box to get an email when there is a reply. Keep it arm's length and relax.
