BMW And Fiat Chrysler Join Forces On Development Of Level 5 Self Driving Vehicles

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has joined the BMW Group in a partnership featuring tech firms Intel and Mobileye to develop an autonomous car platform.

The Italian-American brand joins the partnership a year after the coalition was formed and will contribute to the ongoing research and development of an all-new platform that’s claimed to offer up to level 5 autonomy.

The platform is being produced to be scalable, with ‘entry-level’ versions enabling level 3 autonomy, which makes the car autonomous in certain scenarios such as motorways. Top level 5 cars will be able to control themselves in all scenarios.

If you want to generate reader comments filled with outrage, you'll need to put "Tesla" or "Musk" in the title.

An important partnership for sure, but this technology (level 5 autonomy) is still well ahead of where legislation is regarding private transportation and public roadways.

Agreed. Level 3 autonomy still doesn't have full regulatory approval, forget about Level 5.

This is quite surprising considering BMW and Fiat have not even launched a Level 3 autonomous vehicle to market but are already thinking about going from Level 2 to Level 5.

GM- Agreed it is odd. I still think most people would be happy with advanced radar cruise control, lane assistance/warning, parking help and emergency braking. Having the car chug along in bumper to bumper traffic is great, but I don't think most people really want the car to take them to the grocery store and back. Downside risk is till too high as these features have shown that they still do not recognize every situation on the road.

Quite surprising anyone would launch level 3 autonomous driving tech with no regulatory approval and then try to use it as a marketing tool?

Despite all the "i" related 'hoopla', BMW is rapidly becoming a technology 'also-ran'. FCA is certainly perceived to be at the bottom of the pack technology wise.

Who in their right-mind WOULD EVER rely on an autonomous driving system in an FCA vehicle? Self-driving Giulia..ha, ha, ha, ha. Self-driving Jeep Grand Cherokee...oh wait, they have that functionality already built into their automatic transmissions and it killed the poor guy from Star Trek.

We are witnessing the 'end of days' for BMW I fear.

BMW will be swallowed whole by Toyota. Wouldn't it be interesting if Toyota bought Ram and Jeep too?

Frankly I see no reason to trust an autonomous driving system from Virtually EVERY car manufacturer on the planet. I do not buy cars to have them drive me places - I actually love to drive - even long distances - which I regularly do drive.

I will be buying probably my last big car purchase in my life over the next 6 months - so there is no chance it will be an Autonomous Vehicle. I had planned on buying my Bosses Phantom - while he bought a new one - but I suspect I will change my mind and buy a new Mercedes Maybach 12 cylinder. WHile the Phantom can hardly be called used (It has about 3,000 miles on it) - the carpet needs vacuuming so he is buying a new one. BUT I can get the Mercedes new for less money.

True, because the S-class Maybach doesn't compete with the Phantom in any way, it competes with the Ghost and Bentley Flying Spur... well, it attempts to

I loved how his boss has already purchased a new Phantom which was introduced like 20 minutes ago.

So TomM is going to buy a Mercedes Maybach all of a sudden? People who can afford a Mercedes Maybach tend not to own Chrysler minivans or a Cadillac CT6.

I think Tom was hitting the Jack Daniels a bit too hard when he wrote that.

Come on...be nice everybody. You really never know the resources someone has unless you see their bank statement and/or tax return.

In fact, I sincerely believe that the reason the Trumpinator has not released his tax returns has nothing to do with whether or not he has Ruskie business partners...I think the simple reason is that it will show income levels not commensurate with his lifestyle and it will also show that he has lots of debt and plays the "re-fi" shell game like so many Americans. In America it is deceivingly easy to seem rich but very few people are actually REALLY rich.

Besides, if you want an RR Phantom - buying a used one is really the smartest way to buy one. I do agree that the Maybach is the better purchase (as long as its the recently introduced one and not the 57/62 series). TomM sounds like 'smart money'.

I've always thought people buying RR and Maybach to be DRIVEN I
in, let alone buying a used one. But if you can impress your neighbor, all power to you.
