SPIED On The STREET: The All-new Volkswagen Arteon Nabbed FULLY Unclothed In NYC One FULL Year Ahead Of Its Release
This past week I have to say I had a very cool run in with something that was completely unexpected. In the New York Tri-State region, if you see a car undergoing developmental testing usually it is under camouflage.

The reason is simple: There's a lot of eyes and a lot of mobile devices with cameras floating around. Drive something pre-launch here and it's bound to be spied.

On my morning commute I was doing the stop and go thing across the George Washington Bridge. It's not particularly fun but if you put on a podcast and zone out, it all happens relatively quick. Just over the bridge and on the offramp that spits you out onto the Westside Highway, I ran across something I had not seen before.

There's a good reason for this: It was a Volkswagen Arteon. This is a vehicle that's not due to be in the States for a full year No camouflage or anything.

What I did find funny, however, was the headliess dummy occupying the front passenger seat. Must be for testing purposes.

According to Volkswagen's press team, there's no official timeline for arrival and there's no official price. The estimate is it will hit our shores sometime next summer. Oh, and it will get one motor: A 2.0-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder — I am guessing it will be a four given this is a hugely used motor in the VW portfolio and the VW press person who responded just said it will feature a "2.0-liter turbo."

Considering VW's rather bland design as of late, this A7 wannabe looked fantastic on the road. It looked futuristic and definitely left a lasting impression on me.

That said, what say you, Spies?

That rear three-quarter view is just ungainly. It's roofline looks bulbous from that angle, an odd thing to say about a 4-door coupe design. The front-end looks better than the A5 Sportback, but that's about it. The direct-on view of the rear just looks like a Ford 500 for some reason.

Oh wow! The Arteon that has been fully revealed for a long time now is seen fully revealed in New York.

If you read what I wrote, you would realize I am fully cognizant that it was introduced 5 plus months ago. I'm also aware that by the time it gets here it will be 2 years old and probably in need of a mid-cycle update.

Good luck competing with the better looking 2018 Accords and Camry's VeeDub

This pile will likely surpass $50K. If it were the REPLACEMENT for the Passat at $25-40K then VW would have a solid chance in the declining sedan market. The CC wasn't a great seller in a hot sedan market and the Arteon--I predict--will fail dismally in the shrinking market.

I think is actually LOOKS a lot like the new Accord - from the front - and the long sloping hood line as well. However - add that to a generic rear end - and the car is really boring - another unnamed low end mid-size car - no doubt VW will actually want more money for this as well.

Not bad but this is what should be replacing the Passat. Now.

Camry/Accord sales will be less impacted than the big three. VW is likely hoping to keep Jetta and Golf buyers from straying and entice Chevy, Ford and Dodge buyers with Euro styling an efficiency. It won't be an easy sell after diesel-gate. Tough roe to hoe in a CUV frenzied market.

They would be wiser to create a crossover between the Tiguan and the Atlas. Maybe they could call it the Tigeon. The next Jetta looks like it's growing in size. If they grew it enough to make it Camry sized, that would be brilliant because the Jetta could replace the Passat that has not been a consistently good seller for VW like the Jetta.

I like the design and I also liked the Passat CC which is the same concept. I think pricing will be the issue but inside and out this looks very polished and premium
