BMW's M8 Will Have Over 600 HP On Tap To Beat The Competition Into Submission

BMW's M8 Will Have Over 600 HP On Tap To Beat The Competition Into Submission

BMW is working to get its M8 and M8 Convertible ready for their launches in the coming months - and recent sightings at the Nürburgring show how hard the model is being pushed during development.

In the video below, a coupé can be seen driven at pace around the Nürburgring. A convertible was seen on nearby roads in the following days, suggesting that car is also being subjected to the same hard pre-production life as engineers finalise the drivetrain calibration and chassis settings of the upcoming performance model.

What it needs is styling that would make people put up with 100 horsepower under the hood. The prototypes are not that encouraging. This will be an excellent car to drive, but not to be seen in.

The S65 AMG Coupe already has 621 horsepower but is slower to 60 mph (4 seconds) than the 570 horsepower S63 AMG Coupe (3.8 seconds). More horsepower can actually mean slower acceleration times and "over 600" would simply mean keeping up with the competition in this case.

I highly doubt the M8 will have a much faster 0-60 mph time than the S63 AMG.

Rumor is 680 horsepower and 0 - 60 in 2.9 seconds so much faster than the S63.

BMW is stating the M5 (bigger and heavier) 0-60 in 3.2 seconds and BMW have a history to slant toward the conservative, plus the 8er will have more power and less weight.

Rumor was false. Only 600hp. :(

If it's 600 horsepower, the M8 is not going 0-60 in the 2-second range and more than likely won't even clear 3.4 seconds. The S63 AMG Coupe is conservatively 3.8 seconds. Faster? By a maximum of 4 tenths of a second. Beating into submission? No. 8-Series beating the S-Class Coupe in total sales? No chance.

@GermanNut can you provide us with current S-class sales figures? You may need these going forward if you're going to make predictions and comparisons in sales between the S-class coupe and any competitors.

Well if the m760 with its heavy v12 is able to do 0-60 in 3.6 seconds on around 600 hp, I would imagine a lighter weight car with a fully m tuned all-wheel drive system will go faster.

It will be a brick and while spritely, there will be no submission. It is a luxury GT car like the DB11. Nobody who buys one will be disappointed but I would think if you do have one you will have better things to do than stoplight racing kids in their clapped out Mustang GT's.

The M6 with Competition Package has 600 hp and hasn't beaten anyone or anything into submission. Competitive, yes. Dominant, no.

if that is the style of the final production car, we have yet another boring, uninspired looking BMW, it can have 1000HP, but if it plain looking and priced like BMW thinks it is the range topper of the band, then it is DOA...

And when it fails, BMW will blame the crossover culture rather than take any responsibility for producing an expensive car that fails to impress.
