I don't think most Americans are intelligent enough to even grasp the basic idea of these ads. After all, American marketing is famous for the ideology of "if you have to think about it, it wasn't a good ad".

And we wonder why outsourcing has become so popular.

the point of this ad is to focus on Audi's tech. The european ads for Audi rocks and Audi ownes europe and most of the rest of the world.

With people likeing Lexus (that is for you will) I almost agree with you. I still think they can handle them.

"There you go calling Americans stupid again. Most Americans wouldn't understand these ads because they have no clue about Audi's technology, let alone the brand in general."

The "general public" barely knows about any brand at all- they think of names, not technology. The average person probably knows less about Lexus's "innovation" than Audi's wide use of class-leading technology. Now, the average person and the average American are completely different animals. The average American doesn't know much about any brand at all, except that GM is huge and BMW is the biggest premium brand.

And I suppose most Americans know about Lexus 'technology'? They don't. They just watch the clever advertisements which give the illusion that Lexus is somehow an innovative company.

Audi won't change it's corporate philosophy to cater to, as you put it, "stupid Americans". What they will do is increase advertising and attract a more educated clientele.

"Tha kind of thinking works for higher-end exclusive brands such as Bentley, but it will not work for Audi. Don't expect Audi's image to improve here with that kind of attitude."

Not for prospective R8 buyers. And besides, all they really need is to put more advertisments here-- not necessarily better ones. The only creative car ads I see right now are for the VW Rabbit, MIni Cooper, Toyota Yaris, Honda Fit and Nissan Versa- all youthful cars. Luxury cars can be less creative, while getting their image across.

Funny I suppose how the only place Lexus is considered true competition is in the US. I guess it proves my point--Americans really are stupid.

"Americans are smart for buying Lexus, and not letting the Germans rape their arse with their ridiculous pricing matched with even more ridiculous quality."

The A8L is less than the American LS460L, because oddly enough, Lexus MAKES you check an option package on the website- you can't NOT have one. Base model is actually $74K, but the actual $71K makes it look cheaper.

Ridiculous quality? I believe the "outdated" A8 beats the "new" LS's interior, both design-wise and build-wise, by miles. The LS shares architecture in its interior with the IS and GS- and it just cheapens the look and feel of it. While Audi designed a very special, timeless interior for the A8. When I say timeless, I mean it. It will look good in the last year of its model cycle.

But I don't see the Lexus fareing quite as well.

International consumers are a more accurate indication, and Audi's global sales trump Lexus, Cadillac, and Infiniti.

Where do you get that claim that Lexus isn't more reliable than Audi.
Here I will give you some links:

First from JD Power it shows the Brand ratings:
http://www.jdpower.com/autos/brand-ratings/ - Lexus beats Audi in every category.
You can also look at each cars rating individually.

Here is the one from Consumer report it shows the recommended rating (To get the rating the car has to be reliable as well - also only the car road tested has the rating) As you can see only one Audi is selected and All the tested vehicles have recommended ratings.

Of course all these don't matter because they don't rate the brands according to your personal preferences right???

It really gets me how we continue to go over the same arguments on this forum, time and time again. I must repeat myself to these brainwashed Toyota fanatics explaining to them that their Toyota's just aren't that reliable!

You act as though Toyota's never experience problems. If that were the case then why are there people with transmission issues and structural integrity issues with ES350's on clublexus.com?

These are not isolated events. After owning a trouble free Audi for two years, I simply discredit these surveys, as they are very limited in their data collection and do not account for differences which may skew data.

I also apologize about the American comments. I am American and proud to be American, but Americans do have a lot to learn. The reason why reliability is so important in America, and less important in other countries is that, most Americans don't want to spend a lot of money to keep their cars in top condition.

I take magazine reviews in account - but nothing affects me more than an actual experience. Also, about reliability one person can have a bad experience, but what happens if most have bad experiences???

"And no, Lexus is not more reliable than Audi" That directly means that Audi is more reliable. I do agree that Audi has gotten better - but it's reliability (not quality) isn't better than Lexus.

AudiMan4 - Toyota fanatics are brainwashed??? Maybe that's true, but no more than what you go around saying about Audi. You act as if Audi can get no better - and we know that isn't true. You are incredibly biased, I have noticed from your previous comments. I would try to be a little less biased before calling others brainwashed. All brands can improve here and there, I will say it here: Toyota does need some improvements. And yes I did have a problem once - it was squeaky seat on a Toyota, which I sold after it got into an accident. You are right that problems can be isolated, etc and that some cars are just bad. But the fact is that Toyota's are more reliable than Audi's. That is Toyota's trademark quality and don't try to tarnish it without correct information.

Oh yeah here is a site for you about VW's.

i have noticed a lot of ignorant comments posted up here... I'm not even sure why lexus and others were brought into this thread talking about audi ads...

AUDIMAN4 - your claim that americans are stupid is not even worth commenting on.. but just know that the US has by FAR the richest and most affluent individuals on the planet, the US also has more billionaires than anywhere else - don't believe me, check out forbes...you don't get THAT rich like these guys by being dumb...even though everyone else on this site argues about the different brands, i can say with some confidence that there is universal agreement that you're an idiot.

As for the ads - the first thing to know about marketing - know your market. what works in europe might not necessarily work in N.A. In north america, we prefer something that gets our attention right away... you might notice the ad when you're driving by a big billboard, or it's posted on the side of a bus.. the point is - the general public only gets half a second to look at the ad and that's why marketing is done differently here... it has nothing to do w/ intelligence... just trying to get the most "exposure" in the least amount of time... simple as that...

GermanNut, interesting.. have you driven a r8? or a m5 or m6?. wondering how you derive your opinions. in recent groundbreaking work, McKinsey and Company (strategy consulting firm, for you public school types) identified only MB(#1) and BMW(#2) as "tier 1 bands". the closest one in the US is lexus, with Audi reportedly making a solid tier 3 along with acura and infiniti tier 4. the way it was defined as brand equity and global sales, and while audi did Ok on global sales it was less desireable (and people actually paid less per feature vs. other tier 1 and 2 brands). Rolls, aston ferrari, lambo etc. were deemed to be of insufficent scale and while had brand equity (still less than BMW or MB) did not have scale. So there you have it. its frickin official!!Tier 3?..hahahah, but true.

Does the most expensive Infiniti, Acura, Saab or Volvo cost more than the most expensive BMW? NO and that includes the Acura NSX.

Price ia very good indicator because there are only 3 of the premium-luxury car companies with base prices over $100K. Those companies would be Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz.

They are all Tier I.

The most expensive Audi is MORE than the most expensive BMW.

Therefore by definition, Audi is as Tier I, if not more than BMW. At least Audi doesn't need to worry about the image problem.

"I think Americans are so caught up in the name of a brand, rather than the technology that brand produces."

First I want to know whether you are in America - I thought you were from Texas? Second it is the Europeans who are the most worried about brand name. If Americans only cared about brand name you wouldn't see sales of new brands increase so much. Americans only buy what they want, and it doesn't matter what brand as long as their needs are fulfilled. If the Cloth and manual adjustable seats are so popular in Europe than you can really see where brands play a bigger game (If people buy a BMW with cloth seats, etc than they are the ones who are more biased off of Brands.) Also I believe it was AUDMBMWLEX who pointed out that it was tough for a foriegn brand to infiltrate Switzerland (that's part of Europe right). I believe I once heard that in Switzerland there were two national brands that were famous (German speaking people like German cars and French speaking people like French cars). So as you always seem to insult Americans for some reason, you see Americans are the least affected by brand names because so many different brands sell well here, except Audi ;). The same cannot be said about Europeans as Most hold their National brands very close to them.

Very untrue. My wife has a Lexus. She's on her second RX. It has served her well, but because she sees so many Lexuses on the road, she wants a brand more "upscale", regardless of her needs. Hence, she's sacrificing an SUV for a sedan, merely because other "more upscale" brands don't offer what she has had in the Lexus.

And this applies to more people than you would imagine.
