About The Internal Combustion Engine? It's Going To Be Around For Quite Some Time

What’s it, then: the game’s up, and the internal combustion engine’s execution warrant has been signed.

At least, that’s what I have been reading in the newspapers, as they react to the aftershocks of the discoveries that diesel is bad for you (true), that car makers fudge their emissions (true, in some cases) and that cars therefore have to go electric in the UK by 2040 (ah, about that).

Anyone who thinks otherwise is a fool. I feel sorry for Volvo dealers and their employees. Their plan is flawed on so many levels. We are not there yet and the market they plan on isn't either. Not by a long shot. Long Live the ICE!!!

Sure, the ICE will still be around, in a museum somewhere.

I will never own an ICE car again and I am not the only one. It's over.

Same. In fact I don't know anyone who owns a EV that would go back to an ICE (even Leafs which are super limited). It is going to happen sooner than people expect.

People who expect the EV to replace the ICE cars at ANY time - ignore just how large the current Oil Industry is. Imagine eliminating ALL the North Sea OIL Jobs from the British economy in ONE year. Or even over a period of 10 years. It would create a depression - and if that is bad - it would be worse here in the USA as well.

THERE is a reason why the former head of Exxon Mobil is in the Trump Cabinet - and somehow I doubt it is for the good of the nation.

Indeed, ICE will be with us for the conceivable future as alternative, cleaner energy sources are developed, as well as mass personal transportation to exploit them.

Anyone who is a systems expert, and who looks for a transition from State-A to State-B, knows that all the pieces must be in place before the transition is possible. In the case of ICE going away, we're not even close. EVs existing simply isn't enough for that transition! Some other factors to consider:

- Sufficient supply of the new technology (EVs make up less than 1% of the world's cars)

- Alternative clean energy source. North Americans get 2/3 of their electricity from burning stuff, including coal and garbage. Nuclear? Expensive as hell, toxic as hell, over 1000 nuclear incidents in the US since WWII. Problem.

- Sufficient supply of alternative energy. North America is near it's limits for electricity generation and transportation. Generating stations are NOT at 4% capacity. The electric grid for transporting the power is NOT at 4% capacity. These two factors are nowhere close to being able to supply sufficient "clean" electrical energy, should we find a clean electrical source to replace ICE with EVs. Yeah, this even applies to charging vehicles overnight.

- What do we do with the hundreds of millions of ICE vehicles already on the road? Just pass a law to make people buy an EV and make ICE illegal? And then, what do we do with the hundreds of millions of illegal ICE vehicles? (Where is that transition plan? ;-)

These are just SOME of the critical pieces that are needed for a viable transition plan, and they're NOT in place. Nowhere close!

The more realistic scenario is as follows:

- Science and commerce will continue to seek alternative "clean" energy sources -- like electrical generation, batteries, etc. -- and ways to exploit them effectively and cleanly (e.g., cleaner manufacturing techniques, more efficient batteries, decentralized electrical generation, etc)

- ICE will continue to evolve to get more efficient and cleaner. For real world examples, happening now, Google "Mazda skyactiv" (without the quotes) and "NASA ERA" (Environmentally Responsible Aviation). These are just two examples of people doing real stuff to make a big difference, now, rather than promises of "great stuff" sometime in the future.

By the way, did you know that the "horseless carriage" did not replace the horse and buggy overnight? It took a decades of gradual change to make that happen. Don't expect a sudden switch from ICE to EV, even if people are telling you they'll pace laws to force that sudden transition. Demand to see the detailed Transition Plan, and scrutinize it for its viability.

Remember: Wishing it, does not make it so.

People are doing just a tad more than wishing. People are driving electric and they like it.

There's a wiki page on that:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_and_radiation_accidents_and_incidents

Then there are authoritarian regime and military "incidents" that have never been reported. Radiation and the consequences are not a joke.
