Early Adopters Of The Chevy Bolt May Experience Catastophic Power Failures

General Motors has informed a small number of owners of its Chevrolet Bolt EV about a battery issue that could cause a sudden loss of propulsion. Some of the early Bolt models may incorrectly report the estimated remaining range at lower states of charge due to potentially faulty cells, resulting in the car stopping abruptly.

The automaker says less than 1 percent of Bolts sold to date are likely to face the problem, and GM is currently arranging repairs for the affected cars. Ideally, the faulty cells are the result of an isolated manufacturing defect and not the result of some widespread wonky battery chemistry.

In an interview with PluginCars, ‎Kevin Kelly, senior manager for advanced technology communications at General Motors, explained the solution would be to replace the entire battery pack, even if only one cell turned out to be faulty.

Early manufacturing problems along with unanticipated ways the drivers use their vehicles generally show up early - and it is the early buyer who ends up the beta tester for all cars. I have always recommended waiting till the second year of production - where the problems left are the simple things - like balky glove box buttons.

A Chevy having reliability issues? Wow. I'm shocked.

My 1981 Chevrolet Citation was a complete piece of crap which had to be put down like a horse, and I've never even considered owning one of their fine products since.

Gee - I bought a Pontiac Phoenix (Same X car as the Citation) = a 4 door hatch = and it was a great car - V6 - Neither FORD nor CHRYSLER had anything that could match it - I even brought home a jetted tub in the rear (Yes hatch open) -I did go through an Alternator(which I replaced myself) - but managed to get just over 277,000 miles on it before I got rid of it. Would buy one again without doubt - if we had not bought the L/M dealership.

Now - I remember that many friends had the 4 cylinder - which was a dog - but the V6 had good power - and got good MPG.

Actually - I prefer GM vehicles(Over Ford or Chrysler) - and the ones we put together for the kids were always small block Chevys. They have always lead in auto transmissions - that 8 speed in the CORVETTE is a real work of art - had great AC pumps (Used by both Mercedes and Rolls) - and they were always easier to work on than other cars.

And catastrophic buyers remorse. The Volt/Bolt are the modern day Edsels.
