Smart ForTwo Coupé

When the wraps were peeled off Smart’s all-new ForTwo for Auto Express as part of an exclusive first ride, we couldn’t believe our eyes. The newcomer, codenamed A451, is a little gem.

There is no doubt that the famous city car has grown up – but it’s done so without piling on the pounds. Engin­eers at the DaimlerChrysler-owned firm have kept the original model’s basic shape and cabin layout, but improved the quality and enhanced the design of virtually every component.

Both cabrios and coupés are under development, and both were with us for our journey. But as the only surviving Smarts from a line-up that once inclu­ded a roadster and a four-door super­mini, a lot rests on their shoulders.

Seen a Head On Collision between a Ford Explorer & a Smart ForTwo and the Smart passenger Cabin was More Intact than the Explorer's after the collision.

Conclusion from a Cash Safety Expert: Smart was the Better vehicle to be in as Less Intrusion into Passenger Cell meant less risk of Broken Limbs

Let me tell, curiously, you feel safer behind the wheel of a Smart than a Mini. Maybe it has to do with the driving position.

The Smart is much smaller than the Mini. I sat in one in Toronto, surprisingly roomy until you realize your head is just inches ahead of the back hatch.

I think it should stay out of the country. For one thing, they're rediculously expensive. I went to the England Smart website and if you convert the money from pounds to US dollars, they are about $23k for one of those. And for another thing, it takes the fun out of visiting another country. When I first went to Canada, I thought it was weird how different the cars there were and bringing them here makes every country seem the same.
