#IAA: Upcoming BMW i5 Will Have An EV Range Of Up To 435 Miles

BMW will preview the third model in its electrified i brand line-up with the unveiling of a new concept car at next week’s Frankfurt motor show.

The eagerly anticipated i model, which is expected to take the i5 name into production, is planned to be introduced in 2021 as part of a range of up to 25 plug-in hybrid and pure electric vehicles announced by BMW chairman Harald Krüger in an update to the German car maker’s 'Number One > Next' model strategy.

“By 2025, we will offer 25 electrified vehicles - 12 will be fully electric,” Krüger said in a statement to the media in Munich on Thursday.

The article claims "a pure electric range of between 311 and 435 miles". That's worth noting. By comparison, Tesla's Model S with their biggest 100 kWh battery pack claims an EPA range of about 330 miles.

I would suspect that there are two different battery configurations for the two ranges.

Based on the collapse of Tesla Model S sales (75 in August ?!) The Model S will have to be replaced by 2021

I'm going to take responsibility for this. I started the comments about @TomM and having a few too many. He is biased towards Mercedes-Benz but that doesn't mean his comments aren't valid or should be shot down with overtly negative comments insulting him personally. The local village idiot took my initial comments and ran with it and this is where we arrived. I understand where you're coming from Henry but I still don't think Tom deserves to have every single comment he makes turned into a personal insult.

So you comparing the projected future BMW due in 4 years with the 2017 Tesla? Yeah, I'm thinking Tesla may introduce some new innovations during that time.

No, haven't you heard, Tesla was supposed to go under like years ago...

Also the European rating system (not mentioned, NEDC or perhaps the new WLTP) is always a bit optimistic.

carloslassiter: I rechecked my post. Nope, I didn't assert that Tesla will not improve their range in the future. No need to get your shorts in a knot.

Is that really true? Do you have a link to a post in which someone says "Tesla Motors will be bankrupt by [insert date here]", or are you just saying this with Trump-like bravado, to bolster your own position? Just curious.

It will all come down to styling. Will it be more like a 5 Series or more like an i3? If it looks goofy, don't expect people to shell out for a car they have to explain to their friends as to why they bought it.
