#IAA: Look Out BMW! Land Rover Just Uncloaked The Extremely Capable 519HP Discovery SVX

This is the Land Rover Discovery SVX, the first ‘extreme off-road’ vehicle from the company’s Special Vehicle Operations division and, potentially, the first Discovery to nudge the £100,000 price point.

SVX is designed to sit alongside the high-performance SVR and luxury-oriented SVAutobiography editions. Land Rover insiders say the Discovery’s semi-rugged reputation makes it an ideal candidate for the first SVX makeover - not least because earlier generations of the car were used in the extreme Camel Trophy off-roading competitions in the nineties.

Sure, why not? But so what? Everyone has to have a monster-engined SUV. I sometimes think these appeal to people who what bragging rights to horsepower but who are scared to death of a sports car. Assuming I were to my a Disco, this would not be the one.

This one is different, it is not aimed on on road performance. I would agree with your comments if speaking about SUVs aimed at making them handle better, go faster on the street... silly approach.. get a car if you want that. This one is modified to handle off road situations better. And you can never have enough power... even in the dirt :)

Every time I see a photo of the new Discovery it makes me sad. This SUV has nothing to do with the former Camel Trophy Truck. They seem to respect the Range Rover design history, I am not sure why this model got the bar of soap treatment. SUV are not dynamic vehicles. I would never own a high powered one like this or from any other brand. 455hp or so in your average C7 Corvette is a much safer bet as a daily driver.

They should have retained the more utilitarian look with huge off road capabilities for Land Rover and let Range Rover pursue the fashion trends. On the other hand I like the overall idea of hot rodding it for off road instead of on road like everyone else is doing. You just will never make and SUV handle like a good sports car on the road.

What % of these high powered SUVs are in rollover accidents during their initial test drives?

Is this thing still based off of the Explorer chassis?

Just what the soccer moms and millenium TV watcher needs....an over 500 H.P. SUV to go to the restaurant and drive in liquor stores.
