2019 Hyundai G70 To Take On The 3 Series - Does BMW Have A Real Threat Here?
Genesis, Hyundai Motor Co.'s fledgling luxury brand, is vowing to challenge more established German rivals with the G70, its first compact sport sedan, that will offer optional 3.3-liter V-6 turbocharged performance.

The G70's V-6 turbo will sell alongside a base 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo, while some markets will also get a 2.2-liter diesel variant.

This looks like more dreaming from Hyundai/Genesis. There is nothing really special about how this car looks, though I do like the front seats. In all honesty this vehicle is looking up to competing with the Infiniti Q50 (which is seems to have copied the design from) and the Acura TLX A-Spec.

It's very handsome and tasteful. More interesting to look at than an A4 or a 3 Series. Better resolved than a Giulia. Definitely not boring like the Jaguar Camry. Not forgettable like the ATS, IS, and the Infiniti whatever it's named this year. The C Class is still the winner.

@BobbyBobBob you get your facts from mommy blogs that are unvetted so your assessment of anything has more "ass" in it than any "ment"-al content.

Infiniti Q50 clone was my first response. Wasn't the Infinity (then G35) supposed to be the 3 series threat too?

Interior looks cheap (this is where some of the cost cutting to get the price down is done). Looks like a Kia interior belended with some BMW parts (infotainment screen looks like it is out of the 3)

While I'm a fan of the other Genesis products, this one is a bit of a disappointment. The front looks like an Infiniti Q50 and the rear like the old Suziki Kizashi. The interior is a big downgrade compared to the other Genesis models too.

Sorry -= as much as they would like you to believe - the Hyundai does not compete with - nor can it compete with a true Premium Brand car. EVEN if the performance was measurably better - the premium brand has the History, the reputation , excliusivity, and the elan' that an upstarter never really matches.

For years Lexus never bothered to even try to outperform the real Premium sports sedans - they knew that they simply were not in the mix. Tesla isn't either - and the fact that the model 3 is trying to be a real high production mass market car - reduces its value for premium buyers.

Genesis competes with Buick, Infiniti, Lexus, Audi - and other lesser than true premium brands. IT will be decades before they can get to the premium level. EVEN when producing a superior handler - and better performance - the Cadillac cannot compete it its former space - it will also take time before it does - and with DeNysschen there it might never happen.

It's decent and should do well against Acura, Lincoln and Buick.

This will give Infiniti buyers an alternative if they want an identical looking car with a different name on the boot.

Carbon copy of the Acura TLX with a morphed Audi grill. If it is cheap enough for the clientele it should do well against Acura, Lincoln and Buick.

2 Series taillights. Q50 inspired headlights. TLX profile. Q70 rear deck. Interior not far removed from a Hyundai. Sorry, this will change very little in this space. Will definitely compete with the TLX, IS, and Q50 and won't touch the 3 Series, A4, or C. Maybe that's the intention anyway based on the blatant ripoff of the TLX profile, though a bit more feminine. Not even a semblance of the concept.
It's strongest point is a 365-hp engine with RWD/AWD. But the Stinger has it and subjectively, looks more aggressive (notice I didn't say that it looks better). At least the G70's interior is better than the Stinger, albeit still a notch below the A4 and C and a half a notch below the 3 Series.

Not a bad looking car. I agree with bnilhome, from the rear 3/4 it resembles the Infiniti, from the front 3/4 and profile the TLX. Everyone misses the point here. Hyundai is not trying to compete with BMW, that is what Genesis is for unless this becomes a Genesis. They want to move upmarket and get a higher value or transaction price, thus making more profit. I am sure it will sell well.

And the BMW 3-Series is way over-rated. If this were not a BMW fanboy site you would point out the cheaper materials used lower in the dash, the rather large panel gaps and the wobbly center console. I seriously considered the 3-Series, but could not get past the interior.

Did you just turned this into a race thing? Do you realize the computer you're typing on was probably made in Asia, the very people you're knocking against? Idiot.

BobM, I see your situation now. You're typing on a keyboard from the 50's and the computer itself occupies an entire room and has nice flashy lights! LMAO Thanks for proving my point that you're old and obsolete. There's a good reason why the Asians dominate the semiconductor industry and it has nothing to do with copying. Do yourself a favor, take a step outside your cave into the real world and educate yourself before yapping and spewing such nonsense and acting like the village idiot.

There will always be the buyer who believes the marketing and thinks they are getting a 3 series at 15% off. So yea it will have some marginal market impact as every single newer competitor has, Jaguar, Infinity, Lexus etc...

BobM, when entering into a new market the lowest risk path is to look like the market leaders. The original G80 looked like an Infinit/BMW mash-up and got more individual with the second generation.

Having said that, I agree that when Japanese designers go their own way the result is "unique
" but not in a good way. If the original Lexus started with the Darth Vader face they have now it would have never gotten out of the gate.

No manual transmission, no 3 Series fighter.

P.S.
To be a true 3 Series fighter, I would expect to see a performance variant.

Every auto company has a strategy to obtain the highest transaction price possible. Whether it be option packages, branding, or marketing. BMW is a master at this. Hyundai is just getting started. One common aspect may be better to lease than own.

This is NOT always true: "Every auto company has a strategy to obtain the highest transaction price possible."

When Toyota launched Lexus, they bought market share at all cost and getting a high transaction price flew out the window.

These days, most manufacturers want the highest volume possible and worry later about transaction price.

MrEEMrEE - 9/17/2017 4:48:52 AM

Every product has a target volume to be successful and profitable, and greater volume usually brings lower costs. Though auto companies want demand to match or exceed production to make max profit. It is when their planned production over runs demand that required incentives or fleet sales kills profit and future profitable sales. When entering a new market might you intentionally sacrifice profit to establish market share. Rarely do companies pursue broad volume with low or no profit, like trying to hold market position, example BMW only to suffer the following year.

"Proving once again the Asians only know how to copy.... "

I'd like to point out that Asia is a continent, not a country, and is home to something like 65% of the earth's population across ~50 countries. As you can imagine (if you have a brain in your head), this is a pretty diverse group. So lumping them in together as though they all act in unison makes you sound like a fool who has never traveled, or read a book.

In order to be a true BMW competitor, it must spend about 15 - 20 percent of the ownership experience getting expensive repairs. I'll take a car with 90 percent of the BMW performance and zero percent of BMW ownership "experience."

15 to 20%? Really? I've owned 6 and have seen nothing like that.

Every BMW owner I know, save for one, has had a bad experience. One had a 6 series and at 5 years old was told that a front suspension vibration would cost $16,000 to fix, or nearly the bluebook value of the car at the time. As they would only offer $3,000 on trade-in due to this "issue" he traded it in on a Audi S7 instead. Our CEO always wanted a BMW, got a 5 series and vowed it will be his last BMW. Bottom line, Hyundai build more reliable cars than BMW.
