Car Keys Are Going The Way Of The Spare Tire At BMW
BMW is reviewing the necessity of car keys, Ian Robertson, the company's board member responsible for sales told Reuters.

The fact that customers now all carry a smartphone and the availability of a BMW App which allows customers to unlock their vehicle, has made old fashioned keys less relevant.

I can't count the number of times, I needed to get in my car and plug my phone in so I could use it because it was dead. This is stupid. I don't care if it is phone, smart watch, etc. It is always very easy to lose any of them. Finger print readers would be nice but suppose someone else wanted to drive your car. Lets just keep the fob and make it more useful.

Its a great idea. In the off chance that something happens to your smartphone and you get locked out, you can always just reach out to someone for help. You could even make an "I lost my smartphone" app for it.

BMW itself is going the way of the spare tire, as it fails to compete with Tesla:

Tesla was the first notable maker of EV's. Yes, in it total life, it has NOT MADE A SINGLE DIME of profit as Elon Musk gamed the system. What it has done (thanks to the progressive liberals of the wing nut free spending hussein obamma administration) is to spend $4.9 TRILLION DOLLARS on subsidies and tax credits to Tesla. Yes, almost FIVE TRILLION Dollars! PLUS...additionally, add in the $7,500. the Fed pays to each buyer who purchase a Tesla.

Tesla would collapse without feeding of the federal tit. Please don't insult us with any comparison between Tesla and BMW. You are apparently are quite clueless concerning the frail viability and limited ability of Tesla.

Every single auto maker are making EV production their primary thrust now. Tesla will no longer be operating in a tiny EV niche. It will be bypassed by the major. Tesla will fall into the shadow of the major manufacturers within a year as the new cutting edge EV competition comes to market. The EV market is no longer a niche market. The majors have brought to bear the advanced talent, skill and knowledge they have to produce the new generation of EV's.

1.) I saw a Model 3 in person for the first time yesterday and spent a solid 30min with it... BMW if f---ed if Tesla gets this to scale they are shooting for. It is nicer in person than even I expected, build quality is exceptional, and photos do not do the interior justice. It makes other dashboards look like blackberry phones, including the Model S dash.

2.) Tesla is already eliminating keys with the Model 3. Your smartphone is the primary key and you also get 2 cards (the exact size of credit cards, fit perfectly in your wallet) that can unlock and start the car using NFC if your phone dies.

I drive to the pool club wearing my swimming trunks. I do NOT have a cell phone with me and do NOT want auto makers to obsolete the car keys which are convenient to carry.

This is complete BS...keep the car keys/keyless fobs! BMW deserves to go out of business if this is how they think.

How soon we forget the story of poor Ryan Negri of Las Vegas who left his Tesla key at home, only to find that he was locked out of his car because he stopped in a dead zone.

With a key like pictured you may as well replace it with an app. Just another reason learn to keep your phone charged, or maybe Tesla should start making phones for those that suffer range anxiety.

The replacement of the key is an answer to a question no one asked.

I don't think I have used a key to open a vehicle in the last 20 years. Now with BT pairing the fob is redundant. Only need to be solved is valet parking, though issuing a temp passcode is hardly a difficult challenge.

GM would have been bankrupt years ago if not for the same Obama administration you're constantly ratning about. So, you either need to be an equal opportunity ranter and spread your venom to other makers, or stop typing altogether. I vote for the latter.
