Mercedes-AMG Project One vs Aston Martin Valkyrie A Hypercar Standoff

Consider the hypercar rulebook torn, void and irrelevant. We have barely had time to adjust to the standard the ‘holy trinity’ set just four years ago, but Mercedes-Benz and Aston Martin, two manufacturers not usually associated with the creation of industry breaking hypercars, have come to the fore to try and reset the status quo.

Both projects have been rigorously shaped by Formula One, each taking tangible elements from their respective Mercedes-Petronas and Red Bull teams, and repurposing them into two of the fastest and most extreme road cars ever seen.

I do believe the Mercedes is a real car. Drives, turns, stops and protects you in a crash and can be licensed for the road. The more I look at the Aston effort I see a tub, with suspension arms and little in the way of crash protection/structure. Even this photo shows the difference.

These cars are out of sight! Literally. Most will be purchased, not seen for years, garaged as investments and sold for mega bucks with no to low mileage in the distant future. Great to imagine driving one but most owners at these lofty price levels rarely do and think of them more as currency than cars. More credit to the very few who actually drive them and puts some real seat time behind the wheel rare as it may be. Probably a greater chance of winning the lottery than actually seeing one of these in motion on a road, sad to say.

Neither of these are available for sale - both are basically CONCEPT Vehicles - and before they can actually "VIE" to a standoff- they have to actually be produced. Neither one will end up exactly like what the concepts look like.

It would not surprise me if the Mercedes is the "R8" to Aston Martin's "Huracan". These cars are "emperor's new clothes" mentality i.e. hype and BS rather than anything that advances cars in a meaningful way.

The Aston effort is old school in a way. Just a big V12 in a carbon tub. The Benz effort is a hybrid and therefore modern and at least pushing the ball in the right direction (high performance from a tiny engine with electric motor assist). This could be the future direction of supercars with F1 sized motors that are V6, V8 or V12 and electric assist. "Derived from F1" replaces big displacement of 5.0-7.0L for horsepower.

Both are yawn inducing and pointless to cars than real people will drive.
