RENDERED SPECULATION: Porsche Considering Building A Cayenne That Squares Up Against The X6
Boy, it wasn't too long ago I remember people bashing the BMW X6.

"It wasn't selling," they said. "It was ugly," they said. "It didn't make sense," they said. But today these four-door coupe sport-utility vehicles are selling and it has spawned a new segment that's hot with consumers.

Hell, Mercedes-Benz even ripped off the X6 with the likes of the GLE-Class Coupe and the three-pointed star introduced the X3/X4-rivaling, all-new GLC-Class coupe. This is where we ask "Who's next?"

Turns out we don't have to.

That's because in conversation with Autocar, Porsche's boss has said that the marque is considering a Cayenne Coupe. As of now the company has yet to make a decision on whether or not the vehicle will get a green light for production, but there's one thing that's confirmed: An internal design has been created.

Having said that, Autocar took the liberty of creating a render that embodies what an X6/GLE-Class Coupe-like Cayenne would look like.

...Company boss Oliver Blume confirmed to Autocar at the third-generation Cayenne’s unveiling that Porsche “is thinking about” a Cayenne coupĂ© to rival the BMW X6 and Mercedes-Benz GLE CoupĂ©, but it has “not decided yet”.

He added: “We analyse different segments and this can be an option in the future. Today, no decision has been taken. We have to make a calculation and talk to our customers..."

Why not join the less useable space, more blind spots and even higher price club. There seem to be enough people around who actually buy these squished roof SUV's. Fools and their money I think someone once said....

All valid points but you've gotta go where the money is...

Sad but true Agent 00R. But to MD's point, let's talk units. Is it really even profitable to go to the expensive of making it and having it certified for key global markets?

Changing the roofline isn't expensive.

MD- Looks like a new roof, rear bumper structure, new rear doors, different rear glass, new headliner, new quarter panel. Not a cheap thing to execute in my mind. If it has to be crash tested again as it is a different model there is that as well. But I am not an engineer.

That's CHEAP all the hard points and the engineering is done.

They see an easy way to the Cayenne model line. Which is easy. VW & Audi hadn't seem to figure out that people actual do buy X4/X6/GLC Coupe/GLE Coupe models in descent numbers. They're missing out on profits from that particular CUV/SUV configuration. See Infiniti - as they have taken FOREVER to develop the next-gen FX/QX70.

Meanwhile Jeep/Dodge plans to or continues to pump out RT/Hellcat/Demon SUVs. But nothing with a swank coupe-like exterior though.

Everyone criticizes SUV "coupes", but I see them everywhere. Especially the Benz GLE/GLC Coupes. And the GLE Coupes makes everything around it look so plebian, especially in 43AMG or 63AMG trims.

I think this rendering looks great. Would make the Model X look even worse than it does. Make an electric version and Porsche would be absolutely golden.

You've utterly missed the point. These aren't squished roof SUVs, they are tall cars. A guy buying an X6 is not cross shopping an X5 and comparing luggage space, he's crossshopping a 5 series or 6 Gran Coupe and thinking "Hey, this X6 is easier to get into."

Anyone shopping the ungodly grand coupes / GT's needs a good talking too.
But I do like the 6 series version. Buy a Benz wagon and be done with it. You will be happy because your wife will be very happy. Happy wife. Happy life.

If selling at 1/6th the rate of the X5 is "hot with consumers" then someone has set his hyperbole too low. The X6 is so NOT a sales success.

I guess you'll need to define what constitutes success. Certainly Mercedes, Audi and, apparently soon, Porsche consider this space attractive enough to offering competing products.

It's niche marketing for cheap is all it is. The X6 exists because 7K idiots a year will pay more than an X5 for less vehicle. Moreover, I already quantified success in my post.

Look at what you just said - and who is involved. They are the remaining German auto manufacturers. AND they don't look at this as a competition - they look at this as a WAR - and they must have players in every category that the others do.
THe coupe/suvs are not a great advance - are built on existing platforms - with existing interior parts - do not cost a great deal more to add to a product portfolio - so let the war go - until ALL fail.

I see the BMW X6 as butt ugly. DFitto with its similar rivals. However, not everyone values aesthetics like I do. Even more importantly, my idea of attractive is not The Definition of attractive. It's just what *I* like.

If an automaker can create a product, and sales make it "profitable enough" to be worth the manufacturer's while, then by all means, automaker, go for it!

It is not even profit that is needed. Manufacturers have the platforms - and the interiors - and years ago regularly produced coupe's and sedans simply by changing the roof, doors - and glass. THe same is happening here - and the reason why they all are dong it is SALES - and an investor base that needs to see a competition in every market segment. ANY sale of these cars by a competitor is a lost sale - and they want every one they can get. Leading a market segment is something stock holders like - no matter how insignificant the segment is.

I actually think this works better on the Cayenne than any of the competitors because you can kind of get that 911 roofline going a bit. Not that I would ever get one but of course as pointed out above, there are some people who like high cars.

Before they do anything about building a coupe SUV, they should think about making the new Cayenne look LESS like a Lincoln MKC from the side and back.

Its the heard mentality of German manufacturers. Also call me crazy but it seems like only a matter of time before they all will be making SUV convertibles in search of smaller and smaller niches to propel top line growth.
