PSA Engineering New Vehicles To Meet US Specifications Signaling Entry To Market
France's PSA Group is engineering its next generation of vehicles to meet U.S. regulations as part of its planned return to North America, CEO Carlos Tavares said at the auto show.

"That means that from three years down the road we'll be able to push the button, if we decide to do so, in terms of product compliance vis-a-vis the U.S. regulations," he said.

Psa has several really nice cars - and the DS series would really be a good competitor for Buick and the other near premiums - BUT - these cars are still engineered for the European market - not the USA - and sales of cars are simply not doing well to begin with. PSA cannot afford to come here as a new low priced entry - either. Peugeot has several very reliable very boring cars - they are not junk.

Europeans are accustomed to paying higher prices for smaller non-premium cars - something that has not caught on in the Mass market here in the USA. I am afraid they have nothing spectacular enough -as the Citroen SM - was when it came out - to lead the charge. I am afraid they would need to develop a car specifically for the American Market - to successfully gain an inroad - and I don't see that.

The Citroen SM was spectacular for its ugliness, horrific quality control, and shockingly bad durability/reliability.

@fiftysix Are you unable to connect the dots again? TVRs have always been cobbled-together mongrels built in a drafty barn between pints at the pub. TVR has never purported to be a mainstream automaker. Citroen on the other hand not only saw/sees itself as a mainstream automaker, but furthermore a premium automaker. Thus the poor quality control, horrible reliability, and dismal durability coupled with shocking maintenance costs makes Citroen a sham. Yes quality has improved since the days of the crappy SM, but everyone else has advanced too. That leaves Citroen where it was: a non-starter.

A market the size of the USA is pretty hard to ignore. But if they revisit they should be prepared. And of course this means standalone dealerships and growing organically creating lots of happy customers along the way.

PSA doesn't have a shot. The Chinese do, but not PSA. They have nothing to offer that Toyota, Honda, and Hyundai-Kia don't do as well or better. The Chinese will compete on price. The French won't. The French auto industry will cease to exist when Europe's overcapacity is finally dealt with.
