Audi R10 TDI Diesel Finishes Season Undefeated with 1-2 in Laguna Seca

The Audi R10 TDI capped of its undefeated season with another win, this time at the ALMS season ending race in Laguna Seca. The four hour race was filled with lots of action, the Audis themselves were involved in plenty of contact, but Allan McNish and Dindo Capello drove the number 2 Audi R10 TDI to victory, the number 1 Audi finished second. The Audi had to fight hard for this win as once again the competition ran with 143 pounds of less weight. The amazing fuel economy of the R10 TDI diesel helped out, McNish was able to drive the last part of the race while the competition had to pit for fuel. Read the article for complete results.

Audi will, sort of. No race car engine will ever go into a production car in any form. But Audi will use some R10 technology in its upcoming TDU diesels, one will be a 6 liter V12 making 500 hp and 738 foot pounds of torque, as close as to the R10's engine as possible.

Don't get me wrong I like the Q7 and understand why Audi's used it as their first approach, being that the diesel regulations in the US are the way they are. What I'm saying is I would want to see the technology used in a proper manner,(hence production CAR) like the R8. Now that would make it a true supercar, (EXOTIC) @ that. If it is going to start @ 100K you might as well go all out and give the people something unique to Differentiate from the Comp.

The R8 most likely can't fit the new diesel, but it might get some diesel engine in the future, the TT will get a diesel engine.

I bet there's a possibility of a V10 TDI going into the R8, because everybody knows the Gallardo V10 can fit in it.

Unfortunately, Le Mans doesn't get the recognition it deserves here in the U.S. Indy and Daytona get much more press.

Wow, that is very impressive. Also this is a DIESEL engine--this has never been done before. If BMW didi something like this, you'd hear about it all the time from their insecure, arrogant owners.

Yet, Audi nor it's owners never brag about this impressive victories.

The car is fast, but it also has better fuel economy. So it keeps going fast with less pit stops. Well done!

Well it's not exactley a brand spanking new idea. BMW won the 24hrs race at the nurburgring with a 320d years ago - or it might have been spa I can't remember.

In 1998, BMW made history by winning the 24 Hour Nuerburgring race with the 320d, powered by a two-liter, four-cylinder diesel engine. The combination of high-performance with better fuel efficiency allowed the team to make fewer pit stops during the long endurance race.

Not even close to the same. IIRC that car didn't win overall, only in its class. Plus, 24 hours of Le Mans IS THE endurance race in the world.

I like this idea a lot.. I had the same one three years ago. A performance engine that is at the same time efficient? Brilliant! Now, to blasphemy a bit, Audi should get together with BMW and make a "Turbosteamer" TDI. If they based it on the 1.9 tdi engine in the Jetta A5 / Audi A5, then a 115HP 200ft-lb, 55-60MPG vehicle should be quite possible.
