Trump May Be Delivering On New Factory Jobs - 5 Major Automotive Factories Supposedly In The Works

President Donald Trump said Wednesday that five new auto factories will be opened soon in the United States by a foreign-owned automaker, but he did not specify the company.

“I just left the United Nations last week and I was told by one of the most powerful leaders of the world that they are going to be announcing in the not too distant future five major factories in the United States, between increasing and new, five,” Trump told an audience in Indianapolis at a speech about tax reform. “You’ll be hearing about that very soon.”

This should not be surprising when you go from one of the most anti-business Presidents in history (Obama) to one of the most pro-business Presidents in Trump. Businesses were eager to grow, but all of Obama's policies and regulations discouraged such growth, and should the economy continue to move along nicely, Trump is on his way to an easy re-election victory.

"increasing and new". This will likely a bundle of previously announced expenditures packaged as "news" by the Trump White House. Don't fall for it. These decisions date back years. No automotive firm spends $600M or $1B+ on a whim. The planning process for these decisions is incredibly lengthy and complex. Crediting anything Trump has done (executive orders..) in the past 9 months to impact these extremely large investments is foolish and fails to account for how any global business is run. He is merely a bystander tweeting in his office bathroom.

As well if anybody is cheering the present (not quite decided) trade penalty of 200+ % tariff (based on the new Bombardier CS300 jet sale to Delta re: Boeing complaining about it when they don't have a 106 seat jet (not since 2005) and did not even BID on the business), it is playing very poorly in Canada and the UK as well as in US states where 1,000's of people are employed in all 3 countries to produce parts for this new Bombardier plane. My guess it is a distraction to get you to look away from the failed healthcare debacle, Russia scandal and a likely an upcoming failure on tax reform.

Obviously - Mercedes has announced it will produce batteries in one plant and EVs in another - so that is TWO plants. How many employees will be there is something else though.

I would expect the plants to produce higher end vehicles because of the added costs of being here.

The question is - at the end of the day - will they be "replacing" some with others - and how many plants will close -only to reopen in China - or Mexico.

You would be correct TomM. Most vehicles made in North American plants are starting to trend toward higher value mainstream models or luxury name plates.

Toyota/Mazda and Ford are also on the plate.

Toyota, Honda and Hyundai have shown lower cost vehicles can be profitably made in the USA.

MrEE - Toyota has moved Corolla production to Mexico (or is in process). Canadian plants will make other Toyota and Lexus products but not that model.

Good for people screwing together cars! Not everyone wants to go to college etc... and we need these types of jobs. Hopefully the companies pay decent wages and this is not a race to the bottom ..or they are able to develop unions similar to some of the top German companies. On the other hand we also need to continue to develop cars and other large scale projects like aircraft and such in the US as well.
