Puerto Rico's Slow Recovery Will Be Blamed On The Car Culture
Only five months ago, Puerto Rico claimed the Guinness world record for the longest parade of classic cars: 2,491. Now, in the wake of Hurricane Maria, the island's celebrated car culture has complicated the struggle to restore people's lives and the commonwealth's economy.

Drivers desperate for gasoline are waiting for hours in lines that stretch half a mile or more. One in San Juan on Friday ran from Sixto Escobar Stadium, down the entire length of the Escambron beach, around a bluff overlooking the ocean, and past El Hamburguer and a KFC before arriving at a Shell station.

Has the disgusting mayor of San Juan allowed the resources to begin flowing to people or is she still standing in front of an abundance of aid bitching about how Trump is doing nothing?

Logistics remains the problem - this was NEVER a problem with money (it will be there) - it is the lack of passable roads - and equipment to fix that - PLUS the lack of electricity meaning you cannot store perishable goods anywhere.

WE can now see that what was needed was an invasion by the Army - with their capabilities of going off road - and clearing roads. - The fact that the goods did not get to port or through the airport was neither sides fault - the mayor has no army to call in - and Trump - for all his bluster - simply did not see the backlog happening.

Now that the army is taking over - things will get done -we eventually get it right in this country - when there is a crisis.

THe reason why people are waiting in lines for gasoline is not because of CARS - the roads are nearly impassible. IT is because there is little electricity on the Island - and they need it for their GENERATORS.

The long recovery will be blamed on a poor initial response from our government - plus this being an Island where everything must be brought in(but the ports and airports are not ready) - AND - the fact that they do not vote in federal elections.

The "car culture" will not even be an issue

Not to personalize this...but who in Autospies' management approved 009's post with the title..."Puerto Rico's Slow Recovery Will Be Blamed On The Car Culture"?

Any human with functioning ears and eyes who watches the news will know in 30 seconds that the gas lines in Puerto Rico are from people fueling their generators and that the roads are basically impassable.

Really? Who is running this site? Is there any quality control?

Who cares if "Automotive News" published an article on this - why does common sense not prevail?

"chocolate"..."mocha mamma"....???

...are these terms the new derivatives of the past derogatory language referring to certain people of a certain racial background?

I'm glad everyone posting about the state of things in Puerto Rico has boots on the ground knowledge of what is going on and what needs to be done. Leaders lead, the rest take the weekend off and play golf and tweet. How anyone can justify the things Trump has said about this situation or the Mayor is beyond me. The world is aghast and stunned by the lack of tack and maturity of Trump. Eventually, Trump's base will be so small it will be able to fit into the basement of some red neck NRA clubhouse.
