US Plays Hardball On NAFTA And Neither Canada Or Mexico Like It

U.S. officials in Nafta negotiations are making proposals on battleground issues that Canada and Mexico would never agree to, intensifying doubts of reaching compromise on their tight timeline, according to three officials familiar with the talks.

U.S. proposals on government procurement, textiles and fresh produce are seen by the Canadian and Mexican governments as red-line issues with little or no hope of agreement, said the officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the discussions are private. The last round of talks that ended Wednesday in Ottawa took on a more negative tone at times compared with previous sessions, the officials said.

The USA holds all the cards. Canada and Mexico have benefitted from NAFTA and the USA has lost.

@MD - Not exactly. GDP growth in all three nations has been great since this agreement was brought into force. Trade with Canada and Mexico remains strong and as mentioned in other posts the power grid and sale of power as well as the trade regarding automobile production and aerospace production is highly integrated across the 3 nations. The idea that this is a terrible agreement and that the USA has somehow lost is Trump speak at its best. Sticking to the facts the USA has lost every single case at the dispute settlement tribunal as it has always come with complaints about trade (just like the Boeing complaint right now) that are based on alternative facts. A deal will be signed at some point and it will be good for all 3 parties. There are powerful interests that want to see this deal continue and I have no doubt that it will.

Leave it to a Canadian to say that NAFTA is hunky dory. It isn't.

Canada remains the number one BUYER of US goods. WHile there is a major trade deficit as well - the idea the the USA holds all the cards ignores that in many areas - such as New England - 10-15% of the electric used there comes from Canada. THERE is no potential replacement for that as we close Nuclear plants - and buy even more from Canada. Since there is NO competitor in that market to replace Canada - and we do not even have enough capacity to replace what we are closing down - Canada holds a "TRUMP" card here.

Imagine the kaos if electric rates doubled

There is no trade deficits with Canada or are so small they are insignificant and balance themselves out over time. Mexico on the other hand...

NAFTA is good between Canada and the US as we are the worlds largest trading partners but Canada is small and 1/10th the population of Murica. So proportionally we buy lots more of your shit that you do ours. Furthermore we export much unrefined commodities (wholesale) and we buy finished goods in return, one could argue that it is tilted much to the US favor when you factor in these considerations.

Trump is doing what is in the best interest of Murica and good on him. This is nothing more than a shakedown for a gooder deal and the real issues are with Mexico not Cana-duh.

@runninglogan1 Actually, the Alt-Left/Democrats are simultaneously fascist and socialist.

A fascist "stands for a centralized autocratic government...and forcible suppression of opposition" that's the stance of the Democrats. The "coexist" as long as you agree 100% with them and if you don't they send the Antifa to shout you down. The Democrats are the new Gestapo party.

As for socialism, the Democrats have been out of the closet on that one for AGES, huntee.

You really need to go to school and learn something rather that just saying what George Soros tells you to say.

"Alt-Left." A term only racist alt-righters like yourself like to use.

You really need to go back to school rather than just saying what Richard Spencer tells you to say. Moron.

There are fringe elements in both parties, and we have seen the Alt-Left do just as many crazy things as the Alt-Right. Now regarding NAFTA, it's about time we have an administration that plays hardball and puts US interests first. I feel like our past Presidents, especially #44, felt it was a requirement of the US to always take the short end of the stick in order to appease other nations. Thank goodness 44 can never damage our country again.
