Survey Indicates That Americans Are Worried About Self Driving Cars Being Hacked

U.S. residents are “polarized” on whether to embrace driverless cars, according to a survey by insurer American International Group Inc.

The 1,000 people polled were almost equally split on whether they were comfortable sharing the road with autonomous vehicles, with 42 percent generally OK with it and 41 percent saying they had reservations, AIG said in a statement Tuesday. A plurality of 39 percent said they thought such vehicles would operate more safely than the average driver.

Three-fourths of those surveyed said they think there’s a threat that hackers would take control of autonomous vehicles. Still, the majority said they don’t expect driverless cars will be on the road within the next two decades.

It seems a real concern. They hack everything else. Your credit, your LAN, your phone ... basically anything that has some type of connnection to the net can be hacked. Why wouldn’t they be able to hack a self driving car. They can hack Tesla’s already so you know damn well they’ll be able to hack a Chevy.

Someone speculated that they will hack your car, lock the doors and program the car to drive in the opposite direction of your home until you transfer funds by phone into an account provided. Crazy but not impossible when you think about it.

Its pure speculation of unintended consequences that technology often breeds. Not saying it will happen exactly like this but more than likely autonomous cars will be hacked and have consequences unimagined today.

Just use Equifax or Yahoo for encryption. What could possibly go wrong?

This is Blackberry only hope at survival at this point and may be a good niche if they don't fuck up like they did with the smart phones by being complacent and smugly superioristic (former shareholder).

This is like being worried about being eaten by a shark when you are in the shower instead of food poisoning from a fish dish at a dodgy restaurant. If you want to worry about something, worry about the software having a bad piece of code leaving you locked out on a cold night or misjudging a turn, a disappearing lane or forgetting how to stop, merge or drive in the snow. ISIS hacking your particular car is likely very far down their list of things to do on a Wednesday.
