DRIVEN: The All-new Audi A8 Has Arrived, So, Does It Stack Up To The S-Class And 7-Series?
In the large, luxury sedan world there's a handful of choices to pick from. But, I reckon there's really only three at the top of the game. That would be the BMW 7-Series and the Mercedes-Benz S-Class.

Arriving now is the all-new Audi A8, which rounds out the trio.

While we were expecting something much more dramatic and game changing given the hype the four rings placed on the A8, we will admit one thing. The Germans sure as hell packed it to the brim with the latest and greatest technology.

Of course one has to ask though: Does that even matter? That's because technology is great when it works, which is not Audi's strong suit if we're honest. Also technology just for the sake of it isn't always a brilliant move.

Having said that, the folks at Evo got to sample the all-new A8 and, of course, they compared it to its two German rivals.

Below is the verdict from Evo Magazine:

...All three are deeply impressive to drive too, but we think the Mercedes just edges it in terms of what a luxury car should actually deliver. If there’s a demerit for the A8, it’s that it doesn’t quite hit the heights of comfort and grandeur you get from an S-class, whether you’re sitting up front or lounging in the rear. As a driver or as a passenger, the S-class, slightly ostentatious though it might be, does feel a little more special.

And, let’s face it – if you have £70k-£80k to spend on a proper drivers’ car and want the Audi badge, then a new to nearly-new RS6 (or, if you don’t need the space, a late first-generation Audi R8 V10) would do the trick better than the A8.

Needs more air intake - that 5 acre grill won't be nearly enough. Maybe a hood scoop and some Testarossa side vents?

If you can find an S8 or S6 with that Lambo V10 in it that could be the ticket.

Interior looks really cluttered, performance numbers are not too impressive. Don't see why anyone would choose this over an S-class, 7-series, Model S, or smaller Audi's like A5/A6.

It looks more and more like a Ford 500 every time I see it. Shameful.

This is the most effortless attempt from Ingolstadt ever.

Meet the Audi Avalon!

First of all the 7 Series does not stack up well to an S Class. The stunning-lack-of-effort design of the Audi makes the 7 Series look brilliant. Once again, the Audi has no idea what it's mission is. It's not sporty. It's not flashy. It doesn't scream luxury. It screams boredom.

The Super Fusion--AKA Continental--understand Mercedes' luxury quite well giving 90% of the luxury for 50% of the price.

The Genesis G90 understands the understated, patrician air of a 90s S Class and delivers on it quite well.

The A8 and 7 Series are not effective competitors to the S Class and those that compete in some isolated way (Continental and G90) don't compete with the S Class even though they are oddly the most compelling alternatives.

The S Class is so far ahead of its intended competition that it's shameful.

Looks like a Phaeton with an ugly grill. The video by CarWow I saw on youtube highlighting the tech was impressive, but not feeling the exterior design at all and I drive an Audi... sad

It just looks like a bigger A4 to me. Nothing about it says "Luxury flagship" to me.

AS the S class moves towards the SuperLuxury class with the Mulsanne and the Phantom - Audi and BMW move toward the Buick Lacrosse.

Don't expect much from "new" models as funds went to dieselgate and in future to electrification.

I Like the front and back end. Classy if a bit safe design which will age well but the side profile is very bland. S, 7, LS, Panamera have much more stylish side profile.

The conclusion from EVO is based on the reviewer’s personal opinion and other highly acclaimed publications believe the A8 is the new segment leader. Sales will be the most important barometer and I believe the A8 is going to surpass the 7-Series in global sales. The new 7 has been selling very poorly in the U.S. market.

The S Class interior design is about as cheesy as you can get, especially compared to the new A8

Let's see how it sells. Many customers in the demographic (i.e. the not too young) have complained that the S550/560 is hard to see out of due to its sight-lines, high window sills, super high trunk, and gigantic rear head rests.

I think some will give this Audi a shot and I think people's low expectations will be exceeded, sales-wise. The A8 is a handsome sedan, where the prior gen was just super-ugly, especially in LWD size. The new one has smooth, flowing, lines - the old one looked like a plant employee took and arc-welder, sliced it in 1/2 and then added 8".

New one is conservative and handsome - meets expectations of demographic.

I think the new A8 will cause a lot of sales problems for the 7-Series. The 7-Series was already struggling sales wise against the S-Class and now Audi's A8 takes technology in this sector to new levels making the 7-Series feel even more outdated.
