Hyundai Wants Dedicated Genesis Dealerships And Spin Off Complete By 2020
The Genesis brand is shaping up to be a real competitor in the luxury car space. We doubted Hyundai when it first launched the Genesis and Equus, but the company is moving in the right direction to dump its old "cheap car" image. The brand is gaining traction thanks to the recently revealed G70, but still has a long way to go before all of its problems are gone. For starters, Genesis cars are still sold at regular Hyundai dealerships. This is a big problem for several reasons, but Automotive News reports that company intends to fix this issue.

Genesis has more issues than not having a dealership. For starters they have been a so-called "premium" brand for 7 years now and still do not have an SUV offering. Next, their latest sedan, the G70, is a knockoff of the Infiniti Q50 and Acura TLX and really has no unique qualities. Genesis certainly needs to figure out its identify before it can move forward.

Two crossovers are to be deployed within the next 12-18 months.

The first stand-alone dealers will happen at that point.

Good luck with that.

I think they open 2 or 3, watch a few tumbleweeds blow through the showrooms and then shutter them 18 months later.

tumbleweeds have more dignity that to enter a kia/hyundai/genesis dealership. LMAO.

Seems like everyone on here likes to hate on Kia/Hyundai so much despite their levels of success of the years. If you look at what they have been producing during the lat 7 years, their products have been rivaling most any others in the non-luxury segment and when everyone else was losing money after the housing crunch, they were the only 2 still making any money. If you look at what their current Genesis lineup is accomplishing, it is doing just fine. The stand-alone Genesis brand has only been around for less than a couple years and already outselling cars in their category that have been out for decades. The G80 outsold the A6, CTS, Q70, Continental, and GS vehicles in September. Only the 5 series, and E-class outsold it. The G90 outsold the A8 and right behind the LS. It is only half or a third behind S-Class(with a couple model included) and 7 series. All of these cars and brands have been around forever so seeing this kind of competition from a company that has been its own brand for less than 2 years certainly seems promising to the actual unbiased mind.

Hyundai is not Genesis and yes both companies are behind on the SUV front but they are making corrections. When the idea and R&D started on Genesis 7-10 years ago, sedans were still very much relevant in the segment outside of the success of the RX SUV. The main 3 brands were built around their luxury/sport sedans and that is where Genesis started to go for them. I think they will have real success in the market and you all will still find reasons to hate a company that is showing success.

I can find several cars in the industry that copy of similar styles of other cars and if you see even a remote similarity, then it's only the korean company copying. You do realize there are only so many types of shoulder lines you can create on a car, so many grilles that are attractive, rooflines and so on. Eventually they all overlap in all brands but personal bias won't let anyone dare speak that on another brand. It comical at best to see all these trolls.

LMAO, they might as well badge all genesis as hyudais. The genesis thing isn't going to happen.

I hold the opinion that Kia and Hyundai are some of the best automotive values around. You get a surprisingly big bang for your buck, partly because you shell out so few bucks for your new car purchase. All the power to them!

As for an independent Genesis brand, I see this as a good idea. Don't think of Genesis as going toe-to-toe against BMW and Mercedes. Think of them as being the step up when Kia and Hyundai owners -- who love the brand -- become more financially affluent and want to get a more luxurious car. A Genesis would make perfect sense there.

I wish Genesis big success.

Are they the next Lexus?

Genesis is a disappointment so far - I was hoping they would offer something different, like standard 4-wheel drive or a hybrid, and instead they offer only cheaper knock-offs of BMW/Mercedes and gussied up Hyundias. The fact that they are waiting 2-years to offer a SUV is not good news - it seems that they could quickly gussy up a Hyundai Santa Fe/Tucson and at least offer something to tide them over for a complete new SUV in 1-2 years. It hasn't hurt Lexus to do such (Rav4/NX and Sequoia/LX).

Until Genesis is selling enough vehicles to justify having a dedicated dealership - dealers will resist. Lots of "mall" type dealerships now have individual SALES space - but they then often have single service departments that cover ALL the cars - which is not going to please Hyundai.

Till today - what sells Hyundai and Kia cars are the HUGE discounts the dealers offer for those cars. I do not see an individual GENESIS dealer being profitable enough to justify a completely separate facility right now. If the costs are too high - it will effect the price of the cars negatively - and price is what LEXUS originally sold on.

3 sedans and 2 crossovers is enough
