Trump Could Drop NAFTA And Shut Mexico Out With Canadian Trade Deal
U.S. President Donald Trump said on Wednesday he would be open to doing a bilateral trade deal with Canada but not Mexico if talks between the three countries over the North American Free Trade Agreement fall apart.

Asked by a reporter if he would make a trade pact with Canada if he cannot reach agreement with Mexico in the NAFTA negotiations, Trump said: "Oh sure, absolutely. It's possible we won't be able to reach a deal with one or the other, but in the meantime we'll make a deal with one."

Trump was speaking in the Oval Office beside Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who is trying to convince the U.S. president of NAFTA's merits as a new round of renegotiations began on Wednesday near Washington.

I'd shut out Canada and make a sweetheart deal with Mexico with a quid pro quo on immigration.

I suspect the Republican party is smarter and shrewder than the prez, and won't give in to the bluster and rhetoric.

It's not bluster and rhetoric to look at NAFTA and conclude that it has cash raped the USA.

Yeah, those crafty, shrewd, aggressive Canadians keep outsmarting and outmaneuvering America's best, right? A country with 1/10th the US's population (i.e, Canada needs the US's markets a whole lot more than the US needs Canada's products and services) screwed us! Ooooh, those evil, despicable, super-crafty Canadians! They flex their power constantly on the world stage, with their 80-cent dollar and their global monopoly on Poutine and maple syrup.

All solid points, Matt. The USA was cash raped by Canada! I say nuke the bastards, and send Liddle Igloo Man back to where he came from, rather than negotiating a new trade deal. Best to take them out before those plotting Canucks pull the first move on us in their plot for world domination.

Nobody got a raw deal from NAFTA. However autos, aerospace, power and a whole bunch of supporting industries are so interlinked (production and supply) between Canada, the USA and Mexico, this deal will stay much as it is and go through. The Big 3 automakers do not want their multi-plant global production systems idled by a trade spat originating from the Oval office. Billions in trade are riding on this deal. It will go through and be a compromise for all parties involved. There are professionals who are trade experts at the table. It will work itself out despite what you may hear in the news.

The USA got raped. Mexico got a massive infusion. Canada whistled past the graveyard of their own economic implosion when the USA committed suicide by embracing NAFTA.

Are we longing for the days of a dumb, fat and happy US auto industry, all home grown, producing crap that can't compete on the global stage?

Actually, we are longing for the days wen the government protects American jobs.

And Carlos, thank you for your bigotry and hate speech.

I thought MDarringer was the guy rooting for a free market with less government meddling and no "social engineering", but *this* MDarringer believes the government should serve as a sort of employment agency, perhaps providing a Soviet-era job guarantee?

Strange indeed.

Has the account been hacked? Is it cognitive dissonance? Will a hateful and condescending MDarringer tirade follow this post? Inquiring minds want to know ;-)

@TheSteve NAFTA isn't free market and you know it. So once again, you're a disingenuous person.

Free market situations find their own checks and balances.

NAFTA is an "un-free" market model because Canada and Mexico--by law--have all the advantages and the USA--by law--has all the disadvantages.

Speaking of disingenuous, or colossally ignorant (yeah, I’m looking at you, Matt), are you completely unaware of the protectionist laws and tariffs and duties and taxes and restriction that existed in the US and, for example, Canada before NAFTA? NAFTA **REMOVED** and/or **REDUCED** many of those barriers to make it **LESS** expensive and **LESS** difficult to buy and sell products, and move products across the border between the US and its neighbors.

Honestly, sometimes you come across as one of those ultra-ignorant, clueless, radical right extremist conspiracy-mongers who believes everyone has done America bad, and they’re ALL The Enemy.

This is a good article looking at the ACTUAL impact of NAFTA. In the background over the same period is the rise of the machines (robots and software). IMHO these have had the most impact on the disappearing 6M US manufacturing jobs as well as the rise of other nations who took over lower paying textile jobs.
