RENDERED SPECULATION + More: EVERYTHING You Need To Know About The All-new Toyota Supra
In recent years, one of the more talked about autos in development is the upcoming Toyota Supra. Being developed in partnership with BMW, which is also working on the next-gen Z4, the Supra is highly anticipated.

But as of now, little is actually known about the vehicle.

Our friends from across the pond compiled all of the latest information, plus renderings, plus spy shots to give us an idea of what's coming down the 'pike. While the Z4 is expected to debut by the end of 2017, and likely appear at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show (NAIAS), the Supra is expected to debut later on.

As of now, Auto Express is reporting the following:

...Rumours suggest the new Supra will come fitted with a straight-six engine from BMW's powertrain stable, forgoing the four-cylinder engines of lesser Z4s. Whatever the engine the Supra's ace card should come in the form of hybrid-electric tech to boost performance.

It's likely that the Toyota hybrid tech will have much in common with its Le Mans race cars. The new sports car will use electric motors on the front and rear axle, with a petrol engine driving the rear wheels. Electric power will come from regenerative braking, and will be stored in a lithium ion battery. This will allow both brands to eventually offer plug-in hybrid versions of their new sports cars...

To me this actually sounds pretty cool. I have my fingers crossed the driving dynamics magic that came together for the Lexus LFA. I hope it happens again at Toyota with the all-new Supra. If that's the case, it could be one of the hottest sports cars on the market.

From a design perspective, the latest renderings show us toned down car that bears resemblance to the FT-1. It definitely has panache and stands out but it lacks the obnoxiousness that was present on the concept car.

That said, what do YOU think, Spies?

Much like the new NSX. You can call this a Supra if you want, but it just isn't. Far better for Toyota to have done this in house, go back to the old model, tweaked the design and put out a 450hp car from the factory (at Corvette prices - or lower) and without any involvement from BMW.

Very valid point but I think Toyota realized it had something to gain from partnering up with BMW.

People loved the Toyota/Subaru collaboration. There's no question it could have done it all in house — a la LFA — but there's got to be a reason why they keep doing joint cars.

I get what you're talking about. "It just isn't [a real Supra]." But, this is the way of all modern cars. Times have changed.

If the rendering is right, that will look quite nice and as long as it's in the $35-50K range from base to loaded, it will be successful. If it's above that, it will be dead in the water.

@MD- Do tell about your Z06 order/purchase! I would have posted in the right thread but this is more current. Year, colour, options etc. Very cool... :0!

@canadiancomments I configured one, it was blue and black. I have to decide how bad I want it because the wife is right in that I have too many cars. Truth be told, I'd be perfectly happy with a Stingray, but I actually prefer my Shelby to the Stingray. My motivation was to get a Z06 and keep it low miles as a future collectible.

The Continental lasted 2 days as a CPO and as of yet I have not selected another car to borrow. I really enjoyed the Lincoln, but nothing really catches my eye (that's available) at the moment. I attempted to grab a 2017 Mustang V6 automatic because it would be a perfect road car, but a customer came in wanting one in that color and out the door it went.

Until I choose I'm driving my own cars to Newport Beach and back one trip each week. My ride last week raised a few eyebrows for the right reasons.

@MD- I will assume you chose something classic from the collection for the commute? A black 1961 Continental with suicide doors? Dean Martin coolness?

I can only WISH I had a 61 Continental. The car I made a splash with was a Jensen Interceptor which looks stock, but is fully modernized under it all (LS7, Corvette rear end, rewired). I wish I could take credit for the build, or having the money to put into it in the first place, but it's nice to know generous people.

Hmmmm..not sure with this. If any of Toyota's or Lexus' recent design efforts are an indication, I'm really not getting that excited about this car. It's looking like a fancy 86, and that's an old design already. While the rendering is attractive, the concept was ferocious and looked the part of a all-out sports car. But the production model, based on the camo'd tester, looks much tamer. I guess we shall wait and see.

Pretty sure the render was based on a GT86, so, take that for what it's worth.

I think it'll have more FT-1 flare. Hoping, at least.

I agree with you, but I bet the base model is $44,000 and a "normal" one is $55K.

And that prices it out of the sweet spot and that will make it a slow-selling footnote like the Miata, GT85, and 370Z.

If it leverages hybrid tech with two electric motors, it will likely be more like 65-70k, if not higher, IMHO.

GT86 is priced from $29k to $32k for the Special Edition here in Canada. Very little in the way of options. The Supra could be priced from $35k to $45k CAD, but it will likely be $45-$55k. A Corvette in Canada is an expensive proposition with pricing ranges from $65k for a base Stingray to over to $110k for a Z06.

The GT86 is MINIMUM $5K overpriced for what you get.

I recently "built" a Z06 out of not-exactly curiosity. I bumped $100K which I thought was worth every penny. The wife said I could have one if she got the car she wanted next and I sold cars to pay for mine. LOL

Matt's right on with this one.

The GT86/BR-Z is junk, IMHO. Unless, of course you really want RWD.

For the price of a BRZ, a Mustang or a Camaro is simply a better performer.

Competing with the 370Z would be STUIPD because the Z has been and still is a sales disaster.

pretty disappointed at what im seeing considering the concept i thought looked great. also i expected a SUPRA to be super.. something thay would compete with a nissan gtr

Hm, I wonder if they'll consider going up against the GT-R.

I think not.

Will likely be more of a 370Z-type competitor.

The GTR is a dubious target. Sure it generates all the right numbers, but it's not exactly a car you want to experience again and again. Then factor in how they languish at the dealer because they are $60K more than a Nissan should be.

Wishful thinking it will be straight six with and without turbo like old days, +/- $60k. But realistically, it will be some sort of hybrid and $75k +

Having BMW engine, engineering and carbon fiber chassis should be a competent 911 competitor but will need typical brand discount. Won't attract the US poser crowd or brand locked, so sales will be modest. Toyota strategy is to offer unique low volume models by partnering with others to produce them.
