Does Calling Something A 'Tesla Killer' Instantly Relegate It To 'Destined To Not Be' Status?

If we all had a dime throughout the years for every company claiming to be producing the iPhone, Tesla, Microsoft, 3-Series, etc., etc., etc. KILLER, how rich would we all be?

Yesterday, Volvo introduced the Polestar 1 in Shanghai. And instantly, the two words 'Tesla Killer' start getting floated.

Which leads us to ask the question....What are the chances that it REALLY IS a 'Tesla Killer'? One in a million? Billion? Trillion?

And has there EVER been a product hyped as a 'Whatever Killer' ACTUALLY KILLED that company or product?

Why not just say it's a really cool new product we think will do well in the marketplace?

Chime in and give us your opinion after reading the article link...

Thomas Ingenlath tells Radio Sweden that the long-term goal is to reach a production of 80,000 cars. The number of employees at Polestar now amounts to more than 110. Two years ago there were only 15, SvD Näringsliv reports.

At the same time, Volvo Cars is to launch two electric car models in 2019.

Volvo Cars, having bought Polestar the summer of 2015, describes the company as, “a new independent electrified high-performance car brand,” which probably means that a new Tesla challenger is headed for the market.

It doesn't have to be a Tesla killer. A reimagined and modernized P1800 coupe would be just fine.

Keep in mind, the term "Tesla Killer" is typically used by people who don't design or manufacture cars. In other words, it's just hype or trash-talk used by armchair critics, the overly-hyped and sensationalized media, and websites. It's a term to be ignored as hyperbole.

Apparently it is rather hard to "kill" Tesla. What they do is not easy.

Mostly agree with TheSteve, however there are companies that genuinely fear and hate Tesla and want it gone. Unfortunately instead of making competitive cars they play dirty. Volvo is not one of those, GM though definitely is.

Tesla Killer, no, Volvo Dealership relationship killer, yes... Greedy factory men at Volvo disguise a 2013 Volvo Brand Design as an all new "brand" name it Polstar and decide that a direct to consumer sales channel is the way to sell it... and of course, the Volvo Dealers should repair them if they break, which they will. Greedy and incompetent factory people looking to screw the dealers that have suffered through years of plummeting sales for Volvo, your reward, watch us sell Volvo s without the badge... wont work and Tesla, Volvo is not... Dealers where are you while your Volvo leaders are stripping the profits out of your all new stores?? Oh, I forgot, you have no profits... sorry, none coming either... Polestar... Fail...
