DRIVEN + VIDEO: Does The All-new Mercedes-AMG GT R Actually Stand A Chance Against The Porsche 911 GT3?
When you think of Mercedes-Benz, what comes to mind first? I'd argue probably luxury.

While the three-pointed star certainly has upped its sporting intentions with the AMG brand, and even more so with the likes of the Black Series cars, that's not really its specialty. The definitive Mercedes is the S-Class. Nothing even comes close.

That said, none of the above means the company can't take a crack at the competition when it feels ready to do so. This neatly brings us to the Mercedes-AMG GT R, which squares up against the likes of the reigning champion, the Porsche 911 GT3.

So, does it unseat the king?

Watch below and listen to the verdict from Autocar.

The hardcore Mercedes-AMG GT R is aimed squarely at the Porsche 911 GT3. For now, it's the most focussed performance car Mercedes-AMG builds - more power, less weight and a stiffer chassis setup make it faster and more athletic than lesser AMG GTs. But how does it cope with a bumpy British B-road, and is it completely out of it depth in wet weather? We spent two days on the best roads in South Wales finding out.

If there is a wing delete option is may sell. This treatment doesn't work on this car the same way it does on a 911. The GT3 looks good as does the GT3RS. But you still need to be that kind of guy and want that kind of car. 911GTS should make most people happy.

Regarding wing delete I think it is pretty functional, so, unless they add a major duckbill to replicate the downforce I don't think we'll see a wing delete for the GT R.

Agreed though, the spoiler/wing/whatever you want to call it doesn't work on the AMG GT.

Also agreed. The GTS model is quite good; however, the full banana is the GT3.

Love it. Love the look. Stylistically, it's a vulgar crotch grab like a Sagaris. Me want an AMGGTR.

You're right. It's aggressive and doesn't make any apologies.

The AMG GT looks incredible in the real. It's so distinctive in both coupe and roadster. But it's not garish and desperate for attention. And, in all trims, it goes like stink!

I have to admit, the new GTC looks good in person. The original car was so so in my eyes.

When I accumulate enough S&H green stamps, the MB-AMG GT R is the sports car I will buy!
